Stay at home dad... your grocery cart should be used for official grocery business only, not to carry around your Starbucks coffee.

My step-father is a retired officer. I know my mother spent many sleepless nights worrying about him. He drove his car when he was off duty. I would much rather see my tax dollars spent on providing gas and maintenance for cop cars.

lol.. I was looking for understanding of things...you know...learn of other perspectives of the subject... and I did...as i said in a previous post (see reply post to Larry). I am not "bent" on anything else but obtaining a better understanding.

You came to the right place. There was recently a "pile on" cop bashing thread. As with any job you're going to have slackers and abusers, though I don't believe this specific concern was posted then.

FWIW, I didn't karma anyone in this thread. I got some grey too.

If you want to risk your life every single day you're at work, you should apply right now @ the Sheriff's Office or the Md State Police. They aren't at home playing with their kids or on the internet. The wish they were. They put on that uniform and never know when someone is going to shoot at them or try to kill them. When their wives kiss them goodbye, they never know if that's the last time they'll see them or not. They see the absolute worse scenarios that you could ever imagine. If you're in trouble and you see a cop car, don't you feel a little better immediately? If you just came here to bash the police, please leave right now.

That's going a little overboard. Police officers CHOOSE the occupation they are in.

The original post was not "bashing" the police aside from implying the officer was out of shape. It was a request for information on policy.

Blind unquestioning adoration of the uniform is just as ludicrous as unjustified cop bashing.

By the time I saw this all the other questions were answered. It depends on the department if they can use the vehicle for persnal business. In southern MD they allow it as long as they stay in the county they work in.

That's too bad, its good stuff. Yes drink holders on grocery carts. You should get out more often. Safeway, but don't get mad if you see me putting groceries into a patrol car...

If you can't give good karma don't give any at all... wasn't me. Don't get bent over it. They don't kick you off here for having too much red...

But they have to do a certian amount of community policing. In places that none of us WOULD NOT, unless we HAD TO.

The point is that them having chosen the job doesn't negate the fact that they ARE doing it and it's to the benefit of the rest of us that they do.

Perhaps I am over reacting but I would like to have some clarification on the uses of patrol cars that are assigned to officers - who are not on duty. I understand that I do not know the complete story of things so I am more than willing to give benefit of doubt. Yesterday I was at the World Gym in Leonardtown and just as I am getting out of my vehicle (going in the gym myslef), a patrol car pulls up and parks as well. Out comes an officer in wind pants and t-shirt. It appeared that he was going to the gym. Soon enough, as I walked out of the locker room - there he was - working out.

Now, my issue is not whether this officer needs to be in the gym (as it looked as if he really did), but rather the county tax dollars that pay for the operation of patrol cars. These cars, I do not believe, should not be used for personal reasons – ONLY official business. Is it permissible for officers to use their cars for their own personal use? This officer had no form of paging device or of any sort; much less a radio - so I am inclined to believe he was not on duty at the time.

Where can one go to obtain a copy of the regulations that dictate an officer’s responsibilities to the property they are assigned.

Again, as I said before – I only see one side of this coin….so any clarification that can be offered is appreciated. I just dont want to have a misunderstanding of things.

Probably part of the "on call" program. I listen to the scanner all the time and I hear off duty cops called when the on duty officers are tied up. Plus, seeing more patrol cars on the road does make it appear that there are more officers on duty. I'm not sure about St. Mary's, but that's the way they have it set up in Calvert.

good point....i didnt see things from that perspective! Thats why i post here on these forums....to see things from different perspectives... thanks

...but that is just my perspective. You have a point from the standpoint of footing the bill because, certainly, there is going to be some cops pushing the limits, as humans are wont to do, if there are NO rules or limits.

I don't wanna see someone using their cruiser to, say, deliver papers in the morning, wearing the car out years ahead of 'normal' and using taxpayer gas dollars to run a small business.

I have zero problem with cops using our car and gas to do 'normal' stuff; go to the gym, gorcery's, pick up kids, drop kids off at movies, go to dinner etc.

I would be accepting of some sort of limits for stuff like a paper route and guys who are driving the thing 100's of miles on the weekends, especially out of jurisdiction.

I'm sure there are some rules and I'm glad I don't have to make 'em or enforce them.

To my red karma pal...

...it is meaningless without some sort of comment...you don't have to sing it, though it would be part of the normal conversation to discuss what I said that you disagree with, wouldn't it?

In short, red karma with no message is like farting in the movie theatre during a loud part of the movie; no one knows who did it. Where's your pride!?

Valid point. Now what does that have to do with attacking somebody for posting a policy question that was also valid?

Again, blind support of the uniform is JUST AS BAD as unjustified critiscism of law enforcement officials.
