According to womenshealth.gov

Male condoms are 84 to 98% effective at preventing pregnancy.

Hatcher RA et al. Contraceptive Technology, 18th rev. ed. New York: Ardent Media, 2004:

In one year, only two of every 100 couples who use condoms consistently and correctly will experience an unintended pregnancy—two pregnancies arising from an estimated 8,300 acts of sexual intercourse, for a 0.02 percent per-condom pregnancy rate.

I've never heard a number as low as 80%.

I've never heard a number as low as 80%.

I did back in the early 80's. Condoms 80%, same with the sponge/diaphragm but the pill was 99%.

I haven't had to worry about condoms in quite some time. :yay:

My daughter is here today thanks to a condom. I wouldn't trade her for anything. She was an accident.

Well then, I guess if she was meant to be she was meant to be - would probably explain why after all these years I've never had one break :killingme: :killingme:

So whatever the age of consent for sexual activity, what should the punishment be for breaking that particular law?

Age of consent is 18, and some 16 year old girl gets pregnant (obviously having broken a law). What should the state do to her? Jail? Probation?

What sentence should she receive?

force her to get a job and support her child for one. If she fails to comply, she should be sterilized so as never to be allowed to reproduce again.

also, she must reveal the name of the father, who will also be required to get a job and support the child, or have his winky removed so that he can never again reproduce

Well, since abortion is legal and so is adoption, that's not a feasible punishment for a crime.

I'm getting annoyed with all these rants about ages of consent. If you are going to make teen sex a criminal act, then there must be some judicial punishment attached. What should it be?

It's a simple question.

what I said, and if they choose abortion or adoption then send them to a
juvenile center .
and if it is an adult that is found to be having sex with a teen, then prison for no less than 10 years.

Well, Vrai... what do they do with underage drinkers? Underage DUIers? Do you see them throwing those kids in jail? I don't... I think underage sex should be handled the same as they do other underage offenses... brought up on charges because that is how we get them to recognize that they broke the law, they will most likely get probation combined with schooling and counseling, and the parents will be put on notice as well thereby eliminating the "oh not my little Johnny/Susie... I had no idea..." excuses. I don't see why it should be handled any different. Oh yeah, repeat offenses would lead to harsher sentences, etc. and so on... isn't that what we do with our lawbreaking teens now...

Then define "adult". If the age of consent is 18 and two 17 year olds have been boinking for months, is he now a child molesting sex offender when he turns 18 a few months, or even days, ahead of her?

Do we really want this much government regulation of sex? Really? At what point do we raise our own children, instead of letting the state do it?

Drinking ages, I assume, are more about who the kid might injure or kill while driving intoxicated. I can't really think of any other reason why the state would get involved in a personal choice like that, except for the damage it can cause others.

Teen sex involves no one except the two parties engaging in it.
