Another Jack Russell coming?

Made my day. No....you made my WEEK!!! I'm so pleased :) :yahoo: :buddies:

Lacey is such a sweetie. She is curled up beside me sound asleep. She finally totlly relaxed about an hour ago and conked right out. She lets me know when she has to go out and we took a couple of walks today. Her new sister has her nose out of joint right now but I think sweet little Lacey will win her over.

Had our vet appointment this morning and Lacey is very healthy, however she has really really bad teeth, several are infected (I figured the smell was awful) and after we get the infection cleared up she will have surgery to remove the worst ones. She was awesome for the vet and has settled in so nice here. She was definately a very loved and adored pet at one time. She wants to be held constantly, I just adore her.

Wow just reading this brought tears to my eyes (happy ones). It affects me deeply when these critters leave and I get so happy when things work out so well for them. Eventually we will have a better website so we can update with new pictures and info. about all the "happy tails". Looking like we may have pay a web company to do it since our rescue gal doesn't have time to get to it.

Every time Lacey would look at me with sad eyes, I'd tell her just hold on until we find someone for you. I would apologize to her that I didn't have time to stop and sit with her. I know she is thrilled having her own family who actually have time to love on her. I try to tell them all that I am only here to bridge the gap between the last home and the new home. I do my best to give them all time, but only a few minutes with each one each day just isn't enough and I end up thinking I am trying to do too much at one time (too many critters) and that I am not doing enough for each critter individually. I know I shouldn't beat myself up like that, but I do.

THANK YOU so much for opening up your heart to Lacey after your prior loss.

Hey, did the vet have an estimate on her age?

PS Everyone reading this:

This is a great example for why an annual vet check is so important. Critters do not usually show signs of a problem until the problem gets really bad. I knew Lacey had bad breath but assumed it was just the crud on her teeth that critters get. Lacey had no problems eating that I noticed. If Lacey had been seen by a vet every year, her dental issues would have been caught sooner.

The senior rescue kitty we took in didn't display any signs he had a problem with his teeth but his breath was horrible (easily many times worse than Lacey), and he turned out to have rotten teeth in need of removal, and antibiotics.

As pets get older, vets recommend 2 check-ups a year, not just to get your money, but to catch any health issues that may arise. I see how important those check-ups are.

I am so happy to hear that Lacey's adoption has worked. This little dog has had a special place in my heart from the minute I first saw her picture. I'm sooo thankful that she was adopted by someone committed to her well being and someone who is making sure she gets the dental care she needs. Thanks for the update on her. And thank you Juicy for giving her such a loving home! I love when everything comes together for the good of these animals!

PS - The dental thing is sooo important! The first chihuahua we adopted from HSCC had some bad tartar - his breath was bad as well. The vet said they are prone to tooth decay and loss. We are trying to get him to tolerate letting me clean his teeth. Our challenge is that he was mistreated and any sort of contact that he isn't comfortable with winds up with him avoiding us for the rest of the day, and that breaks my heart. We're making strides, and he'll let me trim his nails, but we've got a long way to go.

Ark, ACD, and Juicey, you are ALL wonderful people. I am so happy about Lacey getting a new, responsible, and loving home. Ark, the things you do for animals, with having a FT Job, is just marvelous, so stop beating yourself up. Those babies are just happy for food, and warmth, and a little attention. Kudos to you ACD for adopting, and for taking such good care of your fur-ball, and for having patience to work with him/her. There's a special place in Heaven for you. :HUGS: to all of you. You make me happy!

Speaking of the dental issues pets have .... the young-ish pit bull mix we have named Clinton (came in with Lacey) has some crud on this teeth, so hopefully whoever adopts him will be able to get that taken care of. Some people think it's weird to get their pet's teeth cleaned but they are no different than us with having dental issues. That dog has to be one of the best dogs because he gets along with everyone and all critters. Can't ask for an easier dog to integrate into an existing family of pets.

I have a friend who gives raw chicken bones to her dogs every so often because it cleans their teeth as they chew on them. Note - dogs should not have any COOKED bones, only raw ones from what I understand are safe. She said her dogs teeth stay clean and have not needed any dental work. Of course I doubt a few chicken bones NOW would help much with crud that's been there for years.

Clinton is the one on the left. Yeah I know, we need better pictures.

Juicey, That's awesome! :yahoo:

I, too got my fur-baby from here on SOMD. Totally unexpected and exactly what I needed in my life. Isn't it wonderful how much unconditional joy and love a pet can bring? Wishing you and Lacey much love and health as she adjusts to her new home. Thank you for opening your family and heart to a dog in need :huggy:

I give my girls nothing BUT raw chicken bones, and beef marrow bones. It keeps them busy for quite some time, tires them out, and cleans their teeth. Some Vets will say "No" to this. So this is another "Personal preference" thing. I also brush their teeth about twice a month, and have plenty of Chew Toys around.

We've had Tucker's teeth cleaned, and plan on doing it every year, but in the mean time, we've found some dental wipes that we're trying out on both the the chi's (yes, we adopted a 2nd little guy who needed a home). They have some peroxide in them; I forget what else. My shy guy puts up with the wipes better than the fingertoothbrush, which I guess is more invasive for him. The wipes were inexpensive, Arky, and easy to use. Maybe you want to just do a wipe down every few days to stave off further decay and maybe clean up their teeth a bit.

The vet recommended Eukanuba dog food for dental health, but frankly, I don't like the scores eukanuba gets for nutritional content and Tucker's coat and eye stains are much better on Merrick, so I'm back using that again after a couple of bags of Euk.

And Roman, thank you for the kind words. The dogs give me so much more than I give them. I am really the lucky one. :)

My friend who uses the raw meat for teeth cleaning told me that I should give Clinton a raw chicken wing and see how it does on his teeth - she said he seems to be young enough that what's there may come off with a few raw wings over a period of time. He doesn't have a lot, but if you look close you can see it.

I've read this elsewhere as well. I may try this, if I can convince my husband. I guess I'd just substitute for their meal.

The first time I gave raw food to my Rottie gal she had diarrhea, so be warned, it could happen if your dog is sensitive to food changes?

happy to be living
Canned, unsweetened pumpkin is s a great source of fiber and can help with both loose stools or hard stools or a dog that is having a hard time pooping. My dogs love it and they also love when I bake them sweet potatoes.
I miss pumpkin in with their raw food and also use it in raw bones. Fill them and freeze them and it is a great treat- it also keeps them occupied them for awhile!

My current dog is so sensitive to food changes that he once had explosive diarrhea in my former all white kitchen - it was easy to see where I needed to clean with the contrast of brown on white lol.
