Oh, and if it is the standard, then why don't they add 20% to large parties?
That is the $64 thousand dollar question...

FYI, a 20% tip on a $64 thousand dollar dinner tab would be $12,800...

XOXO,

Who made this the standard? When did it become official, and why wasn't everyone notified?

Oh, and if it is the standard, then why don't they add 20% to large parties?

The trend may be to tip 20%, but it is not the standard, nor is it expected.

Thats the problem with most servers, I believe. They expect a minimum of 20% and if they give good service, they expect more.

From Elaines link

"The thing about tipping is, we may expect it, but it's not obligatory," he says. "It's a gift you make to someone who deserves it."

Pitra, a waitress at Aram's Cafe in Petaluma, puts it another way.

"I love it when someone tips big, sure," she says. "But I'd rather they left 15 percent and said, 'Thank you, have a nice day,' than to leave a big tip and act like I'm not human. Kindness is conveyed in more ways than just money."

well then lets all be trendy!!

I've never been very trendy. Trends are all about impressing people. I really don't care if you're impressed...and as the customer, it's your job to impress me, anyway.
