Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Oh, my! Hang in there, honey, and do what the doctors tell you. Keep after them until you get what you need! Pain management is one of the things that is looked at when they accredit hospitals and healthcare organizations so if what they are giving you isn't working for you, keep after them until they can get you some relief!

Sending prayers & a virtual hug --> :huggy:

I saw family dr yesterday. She kept me on percocet round the clock for the next two weeks and confined me to home for 2 weeks because I am contagious and she didn't want me around elderly people, pregnant women, young children, people with compromised immune systems and others who may not have had chicken pox. Had to put the breast cancer stuff on hold for 2 weeks also which is driving me crazy. I want to get that out of the way.

Also, to everyone on here----we may not know each other personally, but your kind words and support really do mean alot to someone who doesn't have alot of her own personal support and is very scared. It is wonderful to know that even a stranger can care and takes the time to let you know.

Insurance has denied the breast MRI. Said it was not medically necessary.

Here is the latest.....Dr. is appealing the MRI denial to the insurance company. Still no word. I find it really stupid that the insurance company would rather me go into the hospital and have surgery to see how extensive it may be instead of doing just a simple, non-invasive test.

That just stinks!!! When they "thought" they saw something on my mammo and wanted to do the follow-up mammo and sonogram, I ended up having to pay $300 out of my pocket because insurance wouldn't cover it all. You would think preventative/diagnostic testing would be front and foremost on their list of coverage. :huggy:

I've had one MRI and my OOP costs were $1200. Insurance paid 80% and I covered the rest.

The problem is I am already out on disability for failed back syndrome and 7 other ruptured discs in my neck and back. I am on full medicaid through United Healthcare so I think that may have something to do with it, although when I looked up whether or not a breast MRI was covered, it says it is. Go figure. I am in deep trouble if there are out of pocket costs since I have no income until I get approved for Social Security (been denied twice).

Insurance companies suck eggs! See if you can get a patient advocate and appeal, appeal, appeal.

Here is another link that I found when I googled, for St. Mary's county cancer resources:

National Cancer Institute:
https://cissecure.nci.nih.gov/facts...UHViTG5rPTguMSZDYW5jZXJUeXBlPTI=-40DO1t5mCgo=

There are many other informational links to resources through this source (National Cancer Institute) so if you haven't looked at it before, please check it out. You will know better than I what would apply to you and your situation.

Still praying & hope the percocet is helping you. Rest and try not to stress too much. Remember, someone is always here if you need to talk.

Thanks. The percs take the edge off of the shingles pain. I still have one more week of being contagious even though the major lesions have crusted over. I still am getting new lesions though. As for trying not to stress, I am trying not to think negatively and worry too much.

On appeal, the breast MRI was denied again. Going straight to surgeon (Dr. Fritz) next Friday. Another week of waiting and going out of my mind. I just need one good night's sleep. Between the shingles and this, I don't think that is going to happen anytime soon.

This is alittle off topic - sorta.. I just had my annual checkup and they want me to go for my 1st mammo.. the last 2 months I've been having a slight pain under my left arm - not a constant thing just every once in a while.. its on the left side of my breast up under my arm that goes up the left side of my breast a very short tad.. I'm thinking its a pulled muscle or shoulder thing tho because of all the heavy stuff I carry on my shoulders for work and I do have some slight neck/shoulder pain some days.. but under my arm??? if they do a mammo, do they also check under or on the sides of ur breasts?? I've never had one or seen one so I really don't know myself.. Thanks for any info..

The last mammo I had in April, they also did a sono and they did check this area also. So they may recommend that you also have a sono.

K. Thanks Bay Kat.. I guess I should schedule it.. Where in St. Marys do they do these? I'm guessing the Hospital is one place? Doesn't the Bean Bldg do them to? on 235?

Not sure about St. Mary's, I always had mine done at Patuxent Imaging in Calvert.

I use to get my MRI's there.. now I get mine up in Waldorf.. I wonder if that place does them.. hmm have to call and find out. Thanks!

St. mary's does them. You just need to get an order from your primary care or OB/GYN. I found that the Bean building will schedule you sooner than St. Mary's (St. Mary's would have been a 2 week wait, while the bean building scheduled me for a next day appt). Please get one done if you have never had one done before, even if is for peace of mind.

Just an update. I will be going in the hospital on Nov 4th for biopsy and removal of suspect tissue. At least I will be asleep for most of it. I hate pain.

A mammo will always check the axillary area,as this is where you continue to have breast tissue and lymph nodes that are involved with that area. Butmif you think you will get an answer to pain that may be muscular or otherwise from a mammo, you most likely will not. However, check your results-get a copy-for your BIRADS score, there will be a number. It will tell you if they found anything outside the norm, what sort of mammo schedule you need, etc. Also, although St Mary's is a craphole which I hate more than anything, they have an amazing diagnostic imaging set up now. When Medstar got brought into the picture they pumped millions into their radiology department. This means their CT scanner,MRI,and so forth are new. This means the most advanced technologies are capable with those machines. Remember, the radiologist only reads what they see,if the machine doesn't give a good enough picture, nothing can be done. So,use St Mary's for their machines if nothing else. Oh,and your pain could easily be an enlarged lymph node from something as simple as shaving-and your mammo will pick up on that.
