This is why I argued with my Sociology professor.. all that blame it on the socio-economical background of the person bs.. I have seen first hand - you can have a someone growing up in the slums that can come out and be a Lawyer or Doctor.. and you can also have a someone growing up in the lack of luxury who becomes a crackhead... all I heard from my sociology professor was - people turn out the way they are because of their surroundings.. BS. I grew up in an alcoholics home, with a single parent supporting 2 children on welfare who is now working a very good job with a wonderful life.. a person CAN make the decision to do something to change the way their life is going - if they so choose to.
I agree wholeheartedly with this...
But, that is not the norm.
Yes. Anyone can make a conscious effort/decision to make themselves better and strive for something more.
But, was that due to your surroundings and the support system you had? Maybe you had that one person in your life that you could look up to and get guidance from.
Or, maybe it was that certain something (sport, hobby, etc) that you used as your release.
Not everyone can be a neurosurgeon. Not everyone can be a pro athlete.
You have to have that certain drive, that certain thing inside of you that allows you to rise above that which is holding you down.
If this were the case there would be no welfare, right? There wouldn't be impoverished...
I'm sure the underprivileged don't choose to be so.
