I look at the Sportster as a nice entry level bike. you can get a new 1200 for +/- 10K according to Harley's website. Neighbor bought a 3 year old one, w/ less than 1K miles on it for about $5500 a year or so ago. It's a nice bike, and he can ride this one for years and then upgrade to a more expensive one down the road.

This doesn't make any sense to me. How can an 883cc, 600Lb, motorcycle with 70Lb/ft of torque be a good FIRST bike???

My bad, that was the CBR1100XX Super Blackbird. The ST1300 could be the (not-so-Super) Blackbird. :lmao:
Nope, you're right.. I googled Honda Blackbird.. it's a CBR..

Cause it doesn't have enough HP to get out of it's own way..

Granted most of us that have been around for a few years probably had a 500cc (or smaller) for a first bike.. but today try to find a SMALL bike on a lot.. not an easy accomplishment.

 till they rubber mounted the engine, sportys would do some serious shaking at the upper side of the tach. Your hands, feet and butt go numb, and that gets old real quick.

Don't care for the Sporty for one reason, the gas tank is up too high. Don't like the look.

ANd why a Harley only??

why not test ride a bunch of different makes to see what fits you best, or has the best ride?

The GOld Wing is problaby the most comfortable cruiser out there.. reliable, nice ride.. and probably more American made then the Harley (Gold Wing has always been made in the US)

I went to Crofton to test ride the ST1300 to see how it compared to what I ride now, it's supposed to be one of the best Sport Touring bikes out there, and if it's better then what I have then maybe...

Lot of selection, beautiful riding bikes that you can ride 1000 - 1200 miles a day comfortably on.. and a LOT of different frames, styles and suspensions to play with.

Try to find a bike that fits you, and YOU like to ride more then any other, don't base it on what others suggest.
Did you ride one? What did you think?

1st owner had major medical issues that prevented him from riding, thus the low, low milage.

Which one?? 1200 Sportster I tried years ago.. and even an 1100 Sportster MANY years ago..

I've ridden on Suzuki's and Honda's, but for my frame the most comfortable ride I've been on YET has been the bike I currently own. If I find a more comfortable bike, I'll change again.. though I think I know which one it's going to be, it's made for the taller person.

The Suzuki 850 was a VERY smooth riding bike..

as was the 550cc Silver Wing (first Bike)..

I guess I hvae something for the Shaft Drive bikes.. never owned a chain.

I've never driven a Gold Wing, because I don't have the money to buy one, which is the same reason I've never ridden a K1200LT or the R1200RT...

Still wanting to take the ST1300 and the FJ out for a ride to see what I think, but the hardest part will be having to give up the bike I have now.. I LIKE it!!

I was refering to the ST 1300 you went up to try out. Guess they didn't have one?

I like to feel the corner a little, and not just glide through it. You won't be able to do that on an Ultra or Road King as much due to the foot rests (flat pan instead of pegs). It's not a good feeling to dive into a corner and have the foot pegs, exhaust, kickstand or foot rests hitting the pavement so hard, you're not truning any more, and still have more corner to get through....All of the bikes have many different seats available as well as back rests, foot rests, pegs, handlebars with varying hand placement/positions...all of which goes into compfort.

Very interesting and helpful, thanks PT. My concern is that we will buy a bike on impulse and regret it later, wanting something else and losing quite a bit of $$$ in the transaction.

The VRod was great for cornering but the pegs were uncomfortable on long rides (despite our changing the seats and backrests). DH's ankles would hurt and swell and my leg would quiver and then numb from being on tip toe the entire ride (it was quite the sight). According to DH, the HD mechanic said they couldn't change the pegs to flat pans 'cause the foot rests were built into the frame. At least that's the reason I was given for selling the VRod although I have a sneaking suspicious DH just wanted a different bike.

I'll definitely have DH rent a Fat Boy for a long ride based on your advice before purchasing anything. And especially if I go with a separate 883, it doesn't matter much to me which bike he gets as long as he'll be happy with it.

I agree that Harleys are overpriced but I like the look of them. I've looked at Buells, BMWs, and Ducatis but are not drawn to them as I am the Harleys.

That's what I'm thinking. I'd suggest checking out the Yamaha "Star" line. VERY nice and available with quite a few options.
