If you are starting off, I'd say, used and cheap over cruiser/sportsbike. Take the motorycle safety foundation beginner class, and do lots of reading and research. Don't drop 20+K on a bike and then find out you are only going to ride 500 miles a year. Start small and forgiving. Just my opinion though...

I disagree. Starting out on a 1L+ bike is stupid and even some of the 600s are suicidal for beginners. But if you start on one of the smaller ones, you get high braking and handling capabilities. Those are good things.

Believe it or not, some Harley riders are too ignorant to read that it says "Buell American Motorcycles" in HUGE letters, on the top of the "gas tank".
