Power with Control

Good idea to have diversity in supply chain.

BTW, I was told to put my money where my mouth is any buy one, which I plan to do, but short term, I'm renting one for a week here in Jax. Model 3 standard range. Have to say, its been pretty cool. I can see why folks who cannot charge at home would get tired of visiting chargers on the regular. And the transition phase to the control scheme might take some folks a lot longer than others. I'm three days in and use my foot to hit the brake pedal maybe once or twice a day. Using cabin overheat eats up range while parked in 100 degree temps, call it between 5-8 miles in a 6 hour stretch. But not climbing into an oven is pretty nice. You have quick select features on the screen that make things like temp adjustments pretty easy. You can assign functions to the left scroll wheel. Rolling it is volume, pressing it brings up the bower motor speed selection, thats what I chose it to be. The power, well, its an electric motor. So it accelerates quite well. Noise is not an issue, no squueks, rattles or creaks in the 22,000 mile 2022 model.
Charging is simple. Just type, or hit the mic icon (pressing the right scroll wheen pops that up quickly, Supercharger, and you get a list sroted by distance. Drive there, back in grab the handle and hold it to the charge port, press the button. Plug it in and either go get a bite or sit and watch a show or play a game.

We just bought a new EV, a 2023 Mach E Mustang. It is a schweet ride, with incredibly fast pick-up and a brazillion safety and technology features.

We also have a charging station in our barn, charged by solar panels on the roof. So, in essence, free "fuel" to run on a 370 mile range.

So far, I am loving it. Zoom zoom!

370 miles can you imagine the planning it would take to go on a trip trying to find a charging station and then sitting there waiting for a charge.

Ford might be the second best to Tesla in that regard. They do have an app that will locate charging locations for you, but they are still hampered by the fact that outage reporting for a lot of them is hit or miss and charging speeds can lag.

But sure, lets see what that looks like, what trip would you like to plan? The sorts of trips people actually take, not "Yeah buddy, I Cannonball every year!!!" Fors instance, wife and I will be driving to Mass to see our daughter later this year.

Okay, less than four minutes later, I plugged a 2022 Mach-E AWD extended range into a site called "A Better Route Planner". Which of course also has an app. Very tedious. 48 minutes total spent charging. OMG, the humanity!!!! :) Most normal humans are going to take a couple breaks in a seven hour run anyway.

Maybe your imagination made this task harder than it needs to be.....

My son just left this morning, heading on a 10 hour drive. Prior to departure, he plotted out his route, and studying the network of high-speed chargers, which are very plentiful. The plan is that he will stop to charge at about the same frequency that he would fill up a gas tank. While charging, he can do a bathroom break, grab some food and drink, and by the time he returns to the car, the charging will be near complete.

He is heading to one of the "green" Mecca of the US, Vermont and New Hampshire, and there are so many charging stations at the nearby college campus (Dartmouth), so we don't fear availability of charging stations or the wait. Heck, we were there last month, and drove by a small town that had at least 40 chargers, totally unused.

as long as the gas holds out, then I stop ... drove 13 straight hours DC to Huntsville Al, Thanksgiving Weekend back in the 90's

Only stopping for gas, coffee and bathroom breaks ...no more than long enough to fill up

Longest runs I made were:

1. In my personal Truck, Southern Maryland to Destin Florida. Straight shot from Friday afternoon to Saturday morning. Three stops for food, bathroom break etc., the middle stop was also for gas.

2. Company Truck from Upper Marlboro to Belleville, Illinois. Three stops for fuel, bladder relief, food, coffee and smokes.

Yep, done those sorts of runs. And at need can still, but screw that unless there's a need. And like the "OMG, I tow a 14,000lb boat 500 miles every weekend, and until an EV truck can do that, they are all trash." crowd, it just doesn't reflect the reality of how the great majority of people take road trips. Most people drive 2-4 hours, take a break for a while, then hit the road again.

yeah that was an extreme example ...

the longest ' normal ' drive was Accokeek to Harrisonburg VA on a Friday Night then 4 wheeling in the mountains of WV all weekend - I would not want to be deep off road on an EV .... Jerry cans are nice

hey that's what we need a Jerry Can sized add on battery to plug in

or my grandmothers - Fort Washington to Patton PA ... mom took 5 hrs, I took 3 - 2 hrs on 95. 270 / 70 to Breezewood the back roads through Altoona to Patton

Some folks (coughkylecoughkinkyteet) would act like every single trip is done mad max style until your bladder bursts or you fill up the pee bottle.

Never said any such thing.

I just think it's ridiculous to spend 30% of your trip sitting in a parking lot with your thumb stuck up your ass, charging your car, instead of a 10 min gas up and being back on the road.

Drove to Tennesee only stopped for gas and a burger and 1 piss..that would take forever in a EV if you make it at all..gas stations everywhere, EV charge stations seen maybe 2..I just dont understand the attraction to a EV they really dont do anything great IMO but I guess some people are attracted to new shiney things and like to say I got me an EV,You are not saving the planet by any means if anything your paying for the destruction with all the mining and child labor to get the resources out of the ground.

Not sure 48 minutes is 30% of nine hours. But hey, do your own math. :)

Isnt the below exactly that? :)

So lets do Tennessee. You didn't say where, but my roots go back to the LaFollete, so lets go there. Goggle says its a nine hour drive. Tesla router says thats three stops in the Model 3 Long range. About an hour total.

A Better Route Planner says the same thing.

As for the attraction, ignore all the save the planet blahblah blah. I dont mind fixing cars, fix mine myself. But I do also like the idea of a vehicle that requires almost no maint, and reduces my task load when driving long boring stretches. And the power delivery? Petty damn cool on the "low powered" ones. And I say that having been able to do a few laps around Michelins test track in SC in a Viper.
Yep, I'll lose an hour over the course of a 10 hour drive I take 2-3 times a year. But I'm also saving 5-10 minutes every week and a half or week that I'm not filling up. Call that between 1.5 to 2 hours a year. So the time spent is really a wash.
