Wrong again, Flagboy. I never equated an elective class to anything.

The religious can go to places of worship and celebrate their shared morality fairy tales all they want. -------->>Just don't try and slam it down everybody elses' throats.<<-------

I hear that sucking sound professor, what could it be?

I don't think this is necessarily a positive for Christianity.

Think about it, I doubt that this class will be a parallel to what is taught in "Sunday School", there is no way they could get away with that. So will it be a history of how the bible has influenced our culture and the culture of the world?

Will there be a section on how the bible was written or will it just be a one day lecture "This is the word of God"?

Of course not, there will be discussion on what was included and what was left out over the centuries...how many scholars believe that the bible isn't the literal word of God and that will throw doubt in these students who may not have heard those arguments from their Church.

A general religious studies course does have a place in our public schools, students would benefit from learning about the concept of religion and how it shapes a society. What Georgia is trying to implement isn't it.

How would they feel if there was a Koran (which is the Old Testament) class? Or a Hindu (don't know what their "bible" is) class? I still say that once you open up public school to teaching the Bible, even as an elective, you have to open the door to ALL religions. That is fair. That is America. To not offer it is discriminmaion. Why do you need it as an elective? Elective Bible teaching already exists, it's called Sunday school or CCD? I'll take care of that. I don't want someone else teaching the Bible to my kids anyway, too much room for opinion and interpretation.
The Qur'an (Koran) is not the Old Testament. The Qur'an was not written until over 600 years after the birth, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus. The Old Testament is the Jewish Torah or the Tanakh which is made up of the Pentateuch (The Law), NEVI'IM (The Prophets), KETHUVIM (The Writings). The Torah was completed about 400 years before Jesus.

That sucking sound is Pete.

I see crabcake referring to the elective class, and I see my statement that the religious should not shove their beliefs down everone's throats. I do not see me stating one is directly related to the other. I was referring to the overly religious trying to force their beliefs on others in general.

If you say so. I'm no expert so I won't argue. That's just what my Muslim friend told me so who was I to argue.

Question: do you think I am "overly religious"? Because I think offering Bible study and world religion as an elective in schools is a wonderful idea. And I don't consider it "forcing beliefs" - it is simply gaining knowledge, which is why you're supposed to be in school in the first place.

It's always interesting to me how liberals try to rewrite history and change the meaning of common words. What's even more interesting is when the unwashed masses accept it, a la 1984.

I don't know you, obviously, My impression is that you are not "overly" religous, at least not to the point getting pushy with your faith.

If they want to have an elective class about religion, fine. But that opens the door to having an elective class where the objective is to point out the flaws and evils of organized religion. Imagine: "The Idiocy of Religion, 101"...or maybe "God Does Not Exist: Lessons in Futility." You know...just as electives.

I'm betting some might just go apeshit over those electives.

Probably because you chose titles to purposefully disrespect people :smack:

If you want to have an atheism class, go right ahead...got enough students to fill a class?

Works for me. I wouldn't take those classes, but hey - to each their own.

Maybe they should have classes for liberals like, "Tolerance: Looking Beyond the Rhetoric", and "How to Accept Others' Faiths Without Sounding like a Prick-Face Baffoon"
