9 yrs ago I raised this little runt from a pup....I had raised 3 before him and watched after I released them as a hawk picked them off my fence line one by one..My fat little milk fed squirrel children..

I had a lady over the internet from Iowa contact me and she wanted him as a pet. I really did not want that for him but was tired of watching them get plucked off..so I said yes if you will drive to get him you can have him..She had one already and had one whole room on her house squirrel proofed...He had 9 good years which I bet he would not have had in the wild...

I got this letter yesterday...

TAILS PASSED AWAY SUNDAY JULY 8TH 2007 AT 6:40P.M.

HE TOOK HIS LAST BREATHS IN MY ARMS.

WE WILL ALL MISS HIM AND WILL FOREVER BE IN OUR HEARTS. HE IS GONE BUT WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!

I wrote her and got this back..

Thank you so much for your reply & kind words…Tails would have been 9 years old in September…He had started to lose weight, but was still eating and drinking…that night I had given him a pea pod, and he ate it…and when he was finished eating it he was standing there looking at me…something came over me that I needed to take him out and hold him…and I did…I held him for about 15 mins…telling him that it was ok and that I LOVED HIM…and he passed away shortly after that, as if he waited for me to hold him so he could pass on…I will indeed miss him and am still grieving for him…I know that his spirit will always be with me, and there are so many great memories of him and will forever be in my heart…we had such a connection that could never be broken…I got him in Iowa…and we are in Iowa now…moved again to another small town in Jan this year…Hope you are doing well, keep in touch…

you are such an ass here... :huggy:

Why?
Because I defend wildlife from stupid people who do stupid things to them?
And I try to educate people as to what can and can not be done to wildlife here in Maryland?

I see a lot of dead squirrels here. If I were to find a baby squirrel in my driveway, what should I do with it? Leave it there for the hawk?

NO..call DNR, your local Vet, local nature center..
They all have numbers for wildlife rehabbers in the state of Maryland.
Go to DNR website ..
Go online and Google Wildlife Rehabbers, Maryland.

You are smart enough with the wise cracks, you are smart enough to locate a phone number for help.

See the number under all this: call that number....

Well, that's a good way to encourage me to see things your way. Insults always work well with people.

Does this mean I have to turn the baby eagle loose?

An example of one of you wise cracks...

So if you are smart enought for a comment like this, you are smart enough to look below this and see the statement in GREEN..or to look up a phone number.

Sometimes when a person goes overboard about a certain subject, it tends to drive others in the opposite direction of their viewpoint. JMO
I'm sure that squirrel enjoyed his 9 years of TLC.

I can see the phone # below your post. If I ever find a wild animal hurt, I'll be sure to call it.

Fanatics sometimes drive people away from what is best. You could do more good by not being an azz. While I understand your point, I think that squirrel lived longer than it would have in the wild.

BTW, can you do trapping of squirrels at my birdfeeder? I'm tired of putting five pounds of feed in there every day for the birds and having the squirrels tear it up in about 2 hours.

I am sure you would enjoy spending your entire life locked away from your own kind and no contact and no chance of mating and reproducing, as nature intended you to do. Would you enjoy it for 80+ years?

And then when someone comes to your defence, everyone attacks and makes fun of that person defending you and your way of life.

Do I will keep defending and correcting anyone who makes pets of wildlife.

Even a tiny gray squirrel.

Go read COMAR...and then come back and discuss this..OK?
Depending on your point of view almost ALL domestic pets are wild anilmals, somewhere else in the world.. so what's the difference if it's a squirrel or a guinea pig.. or a Rat??
