Because the Hollyweirds are trying to prevent that technology in DVD players. That's what this is all about. They're trying to say that filtering chips in DVD players are, in effect, censorship and that DVD manufacturers do not have the right to do that.

O for crying out loud. I rent a new release DVD and it takes more than the alotted 3 days to watch the movie, 2 commentary tracks, the sound track track, the making of, the special FX special, deleted sceens, and trailers.

If you bought a TV in the last 5 years you did.

Bought one 3 years ago and no V-chip as far as I can tell. Never seen the option anyway.

That's how the "V" chip started out. Then congress decided it wasn't "fair" to make idiots pay more for the TVs than normal people, so everybody has to pay for one.

How did you even notice the price change anyway?

Pursuant to the Federal Communication Commission’s rules, half of all new television models 13 inches or larger manufactured after July 1, 1999, and all sets 13 inches or larger manufactured after January 1, 2000 must have V-Chip technology. Set top boxes that allow consumers to use V-Chip technology on their existing sets are now available.

Bet you did

It's weird to watch a movie with just music, no dialog or sound effects. All these extras alter your perseption of a movie no less than cleaning it up a little would.

Oh, okay.

I wasn't aware that Congress set electronic prices. That's very informative, Aps - thank you for sharing.
No, but they mandated the inclusion of this technology.

Watch the special edition of the Holy Grail. There's a "Shakespeare overdub" that is hilarious. Best DVD addition ever made!

I've been having a tough time with a TV/VCR/DVD combo that I recently bought. The DVD will only play commercially made DVDs, where my older DVD player will play audio CDs, MPEGs, video disks, etc. Also, if you try to play a DVD from an external player through the A/V jacks on the back, the TV applies a heavy RFI signal so that the picture is unviewable. You can watch broadcasts through the A/V jacks, and video from a VCR, but not video from a DVD player, even if the DVD is played through a VCR.

Some of the new DVD/VCR players have technology in them, at the insistence of the Hollywood elite :neener:, to prevent the playing of video that is not original production. They will not play copied tapes, DVDs, CDs, or other media. Most will still play the tapes you record from your video camera or from the TV. That is a chip they like.

Um, Kain? If we were to filter the normals from the non-normals...well, let's just say that I'd miss both you and Tonio.

IT'S NOT A PROBLEM FOR ANYONE!!! You get your smut, I get my wholesome family entertainment - HOW IS THAT A PROBLEM????
My understanding is that what they want to do is create machines and media that when you watch a DVD, with the option turned on, the movie will automatically skip the violence/language/sex. When the option is NOT turned on, the same DVD will show the entire, un-edited version. I have no problem with this scenario. I try to keep cursing and other foul language from my children, but unless we watch an old TV version, I can't show Raiders of the Lost Ark to my kids due to 1 scene. Yes, I can skip the entire scene by fast forwarding, but I'd prefer to have the DVD automatically skip the single word. Back in the late 80's the TV version of R.O.T.L.A. had "GOSH-DAM" (replace GOSH with GOD) edited out (scene where Indy goes looking for the amulet, and after the fire Marion shows him the amulet and says "I'm your GOSH-DAM partner!"). The current TV version has the word in it. I remember to this day the first time I saw that version, and telling my parent's that they had edited it, and what it used to be, and my smacked my 1/2 way across the room for cussing.
