Like I mentioned earlier in this thread, I was having an issue with my dog getting loose. I was on a few acres of fenced land. After a few escapes it took me more than a minute to find her secret tunnel under the fence. Trust me, good owners of dogs do not want them running loose... Accidents happen.

Dogs get loose sometimes.... Doesn't mean they are an open target when they do.

Please don't think my comments mean i agree with the actions this fool took, because I don't. I'm hearing frustration on the part of the illiterate but-munch with the gun because the pup's owners failed to restrain him on multiple occasions. The owner may have had no idea that said but-munch was so close to action...but they DID know the dog ran loose (or escaped or what ever) they had purchased a new 'runner' for the dog to be put in the day he was shot, so they knew it was an issue. It's unfortunate - but illegal? I don't think the actual act of shooting the dog in and of itself is illegal. Proximity to surrounding residences/businesses? Probably. So therein would be a potential for a small measure of justice for that poor pup.

Just finished up a report with AC concerning a dog that got loose down here and attacked my GSD while my 11 year old was walking her. My LW is the only reason that sonovabitchin' dog is not dead yet. This dog has been loose on multiple occasions and lives near a house with several young children. So when do we say enough is enough? Everyone is wailing about the discharge of a firearm within 150 yards of a daycare, but nobody is complaining about a pitbull (or any dog for that matter) getting loose within 150 yds of a daycare.

I gave up FB for Lent so I would not be posting pics of it on there.

Accidents happen.

When an accident happens repeatedly, it's no longer an accident. The guy posted, and it was quoted/confirmed by the crazies, that if the dog came around *again* he was going to shoot it. So apparently this dog has a history of "accidents".

You and I both don't know how many times it happened. For all we know it was the second time it happened. Besides, he isn't the most truthful guy. He said Animal Control gave him permission to shoot.

Maybe I'm a bit different but once is all it takes for me to do something about it - which for me, means keeping the dog in the house in a crate and watching them like a hawk every time they are out, until i can find out how they escape and i don't QUIT until i find and fix that escape route ....FYI...typically, in my experience, they go straight to the most recent exit point as soon as you put them back out.

YOUR situation warranted shooting or stabbing or throwing the dog in front of a car no matter where it happened. That dog's breed didn't matter. There isn't any proof that this pit pup was attacking anything. Don't punish the breed, punish the deed.

Well aren't you just perfect. When mine got out I took a stroll to see if I could find where she escaped. I assumed she got through the gate when someone opened it when I couldn't find anything. I was wrong. So, shoot my dog for being wrong!

So we have to wait until the dog actually attacks and injures someone or a pet before we can take action, is that correct?

What's the point of that? By then it's a little late, don't you think?

LIKE.
The DAY that pup started to escape should have been the day a solution was put into place. It didn't and it cost him is life. The perfect storm of it's breed, the inaction by the owner and the resulting over reaction by but-munch neighbor.
When i say inaction by owner, i mean the owner knows the dog escapes so keep it on a leash or in a crate or SOMETHING when you can't have eyes on - you know it runs out of the yard. AND it's a PIT BULL. Just by virtue of it's breed there is an attitude of prejudice against it.

If you people would get off your asses and actually*walk* your dog instead of just opening the door and letting it out to run maybe they wouldn't get loose and bother the neighbors.

Just sayin'...

Uhhh... I did walk my dog... every day. It was my fenced in yard, so I will let her roam the property all I want while I was working. I fixed the problem.

Just sayin'....

Pitbulls have earned their reputation. Regardless, any large dog is more threatening than some Yorkie. And I don't want to hear from the usual suspects that chihuahuas are more vicious than Dobermans (Dobermen?) because a small dog does a lot less damage and can be fended off easier than a large dog.

If this were a loose German Shepherd, I would be making the same argument.

It was a Shepherd/Rottie mix that got ahold of my family's dog, and I'm obviously a GSD guy but even so I still have to draw the line somewhere.

I hate Rotties. Worse than pitbulls. I also hate Chows. If people are going to have aggressive dogs they need to keep them under control at all times.

Uh...no......where did i say that?
What i meant was every situation is different. The shepherd was an active threat and deadly force was warranted in that situation because his dog and/or child was in danger. If an animal (ANY animal) is actively threatening me or mine - then it's my right (duty) to respond with as force much as necessary to diffuse that threat. PERIOD.

If a dog is running willey-nilley in my yard and all it's doing is pooping on my petunias, i'm not gonna shoot it, but I will either call animal control or set a live trap and catch it myself and take it to animal control, because it shouldn't be running loose - it could have rabies, mange, worms yada yada so my dogs are at risk by virtue of it's presence. But I'm not gonna shoot it just because it's a pit bull who has a fondness for my petunias. Now if said doggie is trying to bite my precious pupper or eat her kibble and bares his pearly whites at me for getting between him and her....game on - Sorry dude - I gotta back hoe and i know how to use it. Same is said for a human intruder. Just sayin'...
