That's not how I see it, I'm religious
What higher power is there in a doctrine of no higher power?

Since you like to speak in terms of black and white, proof and truth, prove to me you have a conscience that is not a form of God speaking to you.thats how you view atheism within the narrow constraints of your religion.
the whole point here has been that atheist dont need your god to tell them right and wrong, that comes from within.
since you like definitions....
con·science (knshns) KEY
NOUN:
The awareness of a moral or ethical aspect to one's conduct together with the urge to prefer right over wrong: Let your conscience be your guide.
A source of moral or ethical judgment or pronouncement: a document that serves as the nation's conscience.
Conformity to one's own sense of right conduct: a person of unflagging conscience.
The part of the superego in psychoanalysis that judges the ethical nature of one's actions and thoughts and then transmits such determinations to the ego for consideration.
it talks about morality and right and wrong, but nowhere does it mention a higher power....... hummmm
Since you like to speak in terms of black and white, proof and truth, prove to me you have a conscience that is not a form of God speaking to you.
The only thing I got out of that was where it says that it's a conformity to one's OWN sense of right conduct - or, in other words, do as you will because it can't be wrong if it feels right.
Well, that wasn't my point, exactly!well if you believe god is speaking through me, then Joseph Smith MUST have been a prophet as he claimed.
Well, that wasn't my point, exactly!
My point was actually that you can't prove you have a conscience, and I personally choose to believe that what you call a conscience, I call an angel guiding you (be it right or wrong )
Disciples [of Christ] were first called Christians in Antioch... this is historical, not a faith thingy.by a similar argument you can say that catholics aren't christian b/c they believe in purgatory among other things that are not explict to the bible....
of someone believes they are christian, they are christian.
how about unitarians? are they christian? they dont believe the trinity....
be they sure believe in christ.
But, in the context of where this thread has gone, I'm not talking about Smith. I'm talking about Tommy (though I never wanted this to be personal). Prove you have a conscience, regardless of what that could mean for the Latter Day Saints.like i said, if an angel is guiding me through my conscience, i dont see how you can deny joseph smith's claims. I mean he was praying to god when the angels, or even god and jesus apeared to him.....
I guess we should all go join the LDS

Faith by definition is a guess based on your feelings.
But, I'm not espousing Christianity, I'm talking about religion in general (thus the comments about American Indians, Muslims, Jews, etc.) So, I don't see the connection.i will just as soon as you prove that jesus was the son of god. BTW, no fair using the bible to prove anything, if this is about me, i dont accept the memories and thoughts of man scribed years later as fact
My conscience has my dad's voice..
Evertyime i THINK of doing something wrong I can hear the voice of Dad loud and clear..
"BOY, You do that amd so help me I'm going to beat you so hard your Mama is going to cry!!"
Me and my conscience have a great ralationship.. I don't do anything wrong, and I won't make my momma cry!

I'm not out to prove any particular religion is true, I'm comparing and contrasting the teachings of religions in general with atheism in general.
I can't remember the name of the summer camp sponsored and run by atheist... but they do advertise and bring children up to the age of high school in to teach them about the universe, morals, etc in a view with no god and no consequence.well then i will as soon as you prove that god exists......
besides, as far as i am aware, atheism doesnt have a school, or a church where these 'teachings' would take place, its a path unique to the individual

I'm looking on the internet to find the name... hopefully I can get back with it.
I don't understand your point? Numbers grow as teaching is taught and spread. The first church after Jesus ascended to heaven is an excellent example... from 12 to millionseven if this camp does exist, the number of atheists that visit, I guarentee, is a small fraction of the whole.

www.kidscamp.com You can also just google "atheist camps" and find lots of stuff to view.I can't remember the name of the summer camp sponsored and run by atheist... but they do advertise and bring children up to the age of high school in to teach them about the universe, morals, etc in a view with no god and no consequence.
