So there was no Dem Sheriff (presumably because there are no candidates), but does that mean registered Dems do not get to vote for sheriff? If only R's are running, and only R's can vote for them in the primary, and then the winner of that runs un-opposed, then basically the D's don't get to vote for Sheriff?

If he can't run a grocery business how could anyone believe he could run a county ?
Is that any reason to be rude to the man?

Shake his hand and tell him you weren't going to vote for him and then tell him why if you have the balls.

Well, they can write in whoever they want, or vote for the R, come November.

That is exactly what it means. The Maryland Democratic State Central Committee won't allow open primaries so you must vote party lines during the primaries. They believe the Republicans would do dirty tricks and vote for the "least likely to win" Democrat candidate during the primaries. Of course they also just spend $2M of democratic campaign money on promoting Republican candidate Dan Cox for Governor because they feel he is the easiest to beat in November. Obviously dirty tricks politics are still alive and well in Maryland.

Do you want to have an open primary? Let the Maryland Democratic State Central Committee know.

It looks to me like the Governor's race will be between Obama and Trump.
We also know that Obama has the upper hand because of the corridor of blacks between Northern Charles County and Baltimore. It will take the total of all votes republicans can muster to beat this corridor in Maryland.
A really tough task. Maryland is already a mostly Democrat State, do we want to become an Obama annex?

I am so very blessed

You do know that every other grocery store in this area are all owned by large, mostly foreign, corporations, right? Large corporations that have the benefit of global purchasing and grand scale distribution. McKay's is the only locally owned grocery store in the area to compete with that kind of pseudo monopoly. For the past 75 years McKays has been a vital part of the fabric of St. Mary's County, contributing jobs, sponsorships to youth organizations, supporting lots of community events with food donations or monetary contributions.

That they held on for as long as they did is pretty amazing. When Walmart, Weis, Food Lion, Giant, Harris Teeter, and Dollar General rolled on, they couldn't compete with that. Add in the March electrical bill for March 2022 jumping $30,000 over their normal bill amount, on a business that already has narrow profit margins, and the economics of keeping their stores open was strangling.

Say what you will about Tommy, but he tried. He invested in SMC greatly, and no one should deny him his contributions to our community.

I don't necessarily want open primaries, just thought this was an interesting outcome. There might be a Sheriff candidate that 100% of R's like, but only 10% of D's. And another candidate that 80% of R's like, and 50% of D's like. The second candidate could lose in the primary and their name wont show on the ballot even though they might be overwhelmingly the most highly supported candidate. And no, write-ins basically never win unless you live in a small town.

I might add that Tommy is not a young man and just might enjoy retirement.
Just as Gilbert Murphy sold his small store. If you have a few bucks saved and no one in the family who wants to come in and run it or is not capable of doing so why not take a few years and try to enjoy life without the worries of running a business. Privately owned Grocery stores like shade tree mechanics are a thing of the past.
Remember when every gas station had a mechanic? No longer, now they just pump gas, it takes a computer trained person and the proper electronic equipment to repair today's cars.
