Kittens...

Just 1 of those guys would eat these 4 and still be hungry. :ohwell:

That's right... I have the FOURTH one in custody now. :yahoo: My FIL got her trapped earlier today. She was not a happy camper at 1st and she did bite me when I moved her from his holding area to our carrier. Thankfully, I was wearing gloves or that would have fricken hurt.

I have to get her somewhat social before I can have her checked in at the Humane Society... I hope to do that Friday or Saturday but I will just have to see how it goes... I put her litter mates inside the carrier with her but the striped male didn't have time for that reunion and was off playing with some toys. Her grey litter mates did stay with her and they all slept for several hours. No sooner did they leave, she seemed unsettled but I wrapped her in a towel and put her back in the carrier. Soon after, she went back to sleep. I am hoping that if she sees how her siblings have taken to humans that she will move along a little quicker. I did move them into a spare bedroom with a TV on. I changed the channel from True Crime to a children's channel. I wouldn't want them to get any ideas. It is said a TV will let them get used to human voices.

Must be a day for ferals? I saw a Mama and 1 baby by my barn today under the wood stacked on pallets. Caught the baby so far who is terrified. Hope the 2 traps net the Mama and another baby by morning (if there are more babies). The traps are under cover so even it it rains they won't get wet.

Our kitten maker was caught yesterday morning; spayed by 10 a.m. and released yesterday evening (vet said as soon as she appeared to be familiar with her surroundings.... let her go).

I am so happy this is FINALLY over. :yahoo:

On Wednesday morning, her last kitten was trapped and that is when all food and water was stopped. My MIL was so upset because she thought it was cruel we took her kittens and ordered her to withhold all food... but my husband was very firm, almost showing a temper with her... "MOM DO NOT FEED HER... WE HAVE TO GET HER TRAPPED... JUST DON'T" :cds: This last batch... well... I had to go to the Humane Society in person since the phones were not working and work out a deal with them to prep them for adoption. Prior to the 'free' adoption day, they had almost 100 cats/kittens needing homes AND all the rescue volunteers are booked. I think I saw that 19 pets there were homed so that barely puts a dent in what they already have. :ohwell: I do have bites on homes now with this batch and it has helped that I have an open door policy with those in my neighborhood that have expressed interest to play with them.

Our fosters go in to see the vet tomorrow for a check up and weigh-in. If they pass, they will be kept, fixed and available for adoption later this week.

:keepingfingerscrossed: but I don't want to get my hopes up. My girls only checked in at 1.6 lbs. last week so back home they went. The 4th kitten that I mentioned in another thread as not being very nice still will not approach but she has gotten so much better about being touched and petted.

My family wants to keep 1 of them but I dunno... one of my female cats is rather pissed about this whole thing and I really don't want to force it. She sees the kitten and growls... and besides... I really don't think I want THREE cats.

Yeah cats can be funny about newcomers. My 1st batch of 3 were done at Humane Society yesterday. I also had a feral female spayed yesterday that I caught at my barn. She could very well be the Momma to the 2nd batch of 3 kittens (caught at barn).

I'll be happy to pass on the info. about the ones you have available if someone is interested in a different color/personality than what I have now. My 2nd batch won't get done for another week or 2. I'll start my own thread about mine so I won't be hijacking yours :buddies: .

We have 2 litters of little furballs running around our neighborhood right now. There are a ton of stray cats in the area. The kittens are so adorable. The kids are begging because the one litter seems to reeeeeeeally like our yard, but NO. They can stay in my yard. I'm moving in a month or so. I'm tempted to relocate them to the new place and let them live outside, but I've been told that will not be allowed.

I have had people call to tell me about kittens at/near the Shell Station on Oxon Hill Road, and also a few at the liquor at RT 5/Brandywine Road. I've been to the liquor store about 4 times now and have never seen them. Not like I need MORE to take care of right now LOL.

Maybe you can get people in the area to coordinate to trap them to get them fixed and a Rabies shot? I'd be happy to help explain the process if a few folks are willing to help with the cats?

The folks in my neighborhood do not care and would not help. I'd be willing to trap them, but I will not be forking out for any shots. I pay for enough shots as it is with my kids.

Well the neighborhood folks would need to pitch in a few dollars to get the cats fixed. If enough people care about not having a lot of cats around, it can be done.

What County are you in?

Nobody has the money to fix stray cats, including myself.

If an entire neighborhood participated, it could probably be done for less than $5 per household. In the short term there would be an immediate reduction of the number of kittens seen around.

I do not even associate with a majority of my neighbors and I'm moving in a month. I'm certainly not going to walk around asking people for money to spend on stray cats. While I do not want to see them constantly multiplying, I have my own family to provide for.

oh ok well it won't be a problem in your backyard for long then.

I would not pay for catch, vet and release. But I would pitch in for catch and put down. I do not believe condoning feral colonies is humane.

I know it's a very controversial thing, and I too don't like to see the cats living that way. Many times they die a painful death due to disease or injuries they sustain. One cat I caught had a serious ear infection and he was lucky to have been caught in the trap that day. We were able to cure the infection and he on to be adopted. Another had a bad leg infection and wasn't so lucky, as the vet recommended that one be put down due to it being wild, and there was no way to treat the wound daily due to the cat being wild. So we went with the vet's recommendation to allow the cat to be put down.

Some people wouldn't donate if the cats were being put down. I think most people assume that the government has money in place to handle the services these critters need, but that just is not the case. Most people also assume that wild cats can be trapped and relocated like other wild critters .... nope they try to find their way home in about 1/2 of the cases.

Or they can continue to live amongst the land like the rest of the wild animals...

arkie.... many people are not as commited to pets as others are..

I love pets but if there were MANY kittens running in my hood.... I would not trap them... nor would I waste my money on fixing them .... that is money I need for my pets.

hell... there would be no way I would ask everyone in my hood to help or even donate money.... I PAY FOR MOST of them to live there and eat better than i do...

.... fact is... they all cant be saved.. sad but true.

most humane thing is to call Tri county... tell them you are worried about all the feral cats and you have small kids

you worry about rabies ...

let them trap them... .and its up to them after that!

I would be more worried about rabies and intestinal parisites they would have...and pooping in the yard, flower bed... walking on the cars... spreading the cysts/eggs that you could come in contact with and get:coffee:

I had a hard time understanding the desire my MIL had to capture the kitten maker, fix and release... but I had to remind myself that I didn't have to live with her choice. She isn't a pet at all... just some rodent that comes to the door to eat what has been left out for her.

Now I thought I read somewhere on the internet not that long ago that a Feral Rescue group got grant money for this sort of practice in St. Mary's County?

I understand.... you have the kittens and are fostering them TILL they get adopted....

and had one mother to deal with. You are not paying for the kittens to be vetted or fixed right? (now you may have paid for the mother)

but Im not sure of many people that could take on the expense of fixing and vetting 3 - how ever many cats and kittens.

now if Socki wanted to foster the kittens thru somewhere that would pay for them.... that would be different. But she cant.... so... want some more kittens :killingme
