Mast Cell Tumor - Boxer

My boxer was just diagnosed with MCT on Friday. I'm a mess. I read the "Damn Dog" thread with Pixie and got a lot of info from there but my question is.. I took her to Three Notch and saw Dr. Yasuda. I LOVE her but has anyone dealt with MCT and her? I'm thinking about driving to Calvert to see Dr. Brown and get a 2nd opinion.

Can someone lead me in the right direction? My brain is sooo confused and all I can think about is my poor pup.

Also... Can this kill her? I mean I know its cancer and cancer kills but it seems like you can just remove these things and move on.

My doc said nothing about the Benedryl. Should I start her on it anyways?

I'm sorry to hear this about your dog. I used to see Dr. Brown but he can't do any of the surgeries required. I switched over to Prince Frederick Animal hospital. Dr. Jennifer Craig is the one who diagnosed my girl when she had it. It can spread quickly if not taken care of in a reasonable time. My girl unfortunately had it in an inoperable place. I really love the doc's at Prince Frederick, they are all really good doc's and very knowledgable. I would be more than happy to give the rest of the info on my dog if you want to pm me.

Go ahead and get the second opinion - couldn't hurt, right?

Good luck to you and your pup. :huggy:

I used All Kinds in Callaway and was VERY pleased. Basically, you won't know how bad it is until after it's removed and sent for testing. Yes, start Benadry now. What kind of food is your dog on? I'm a little busy this afternoon but feel free to PM if there are any questions I can answer.

Shes only 5 :(

The tumor is on her right front thigh

Reason I asked is we have a boxer that is almost 10 and he has lumps popping up in a few places, from what I've read it is common for boxers to get cancer as they age; wish you the best

Dogs and Cats Veterinary Referral - Bowie, MD

Here is a link to Dogs and Cats Veterinary Referral in Bowie. They are a specialty hospital and I think specialize in cancer. At least that is where I took my dog when she had colon cancer and they took care of her. They are very good and give you all the options and I thought they were reasonable. I hope this helps and good luck.

We have, he was recently diagnosed with "Cushing's" disease as well; he seems happy and appears to have no discomfort. Nature will take it's course in due time.

Before you panic you need to have the tumor tested and graded. We saw Dr. Peterson at Atlantic Vet in Annapolis. Annapolis Baltimore Maryland Veterinary Hospital Cancer Oncology Internal Medicine Atlantic Veterinary Internal Medicine and Oncology AVIM

Catt also has had experience with cancer and she went to Bowie for her boxer.

I would start you boxer on benadryl immediately. You can do 1mg per pound. Twice a day.

You can also go onto boxerworld.com under health issues and do a MCT search. There is a lot of good information of treatments and diet. (Cami on boxerworld had a wealth of information too).

Once you get the tumor graded you will have a better idea of your plan of action.

Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

I thought for sure that Mily had just a fatty tumor because it wasn't growing at all and in addition to the one she had on her belly, she had a small one on her chest. One on the belly mast cell, one on the chest fatty. It's fairly cheap to get them tested. I think it was around $30.

She had cytology done and the doc said that they had to take out the tumor to see what level it is at 1-3.

is there some other way to test it?

Nope, it has to be removed and sent out to be graded and to make sure they were able to get clean margins on it.
