Md Passes largest tax hike in history.

R.I.P. Bobo, We miss you!
This is too easy.
Glendenning, remember him?
Spendening passed the Thorton bill that pumped some 2 billion plus dollars into the baltimore city schools right before he left office, the problem is that he never got funding for it. So here is this 2 billion dollar bill sitting there with no money to pay for it.
Ehrlich never gave Thorton a second look since it was only for baltimore city and not for the good of the state, so again, it went another 4 years without funding.
Now along comes Omouthy, and suddenly he is concerned with funding this bill, and he claims that the deficit that this bill brings with it is Ehrlichs fault, He fails to mention that it was spendenings admin that created the mess in the first place.
anyway, Omouthy decides to fund this thorton thing in an attempt at securing the balitmoron vote next time around, and he does so by taking money from other things like county schools, police, fire etc... now, after doing this, the state is in serious financial trouble because it is not able to pay for these services that he raped for thorton.

thus, the tax hike is for all the services he took money from to pay off thorton in hopes of getting the baltimoron vote in his pocket.

without thorton the state would have been in very good shape.

Even without Thorton, he still would have found something else to piss the money away on. He sucks..

Exactly..... I didn't vote for O'Malley and frankly, his election was so close that had Erlich had the side of the State Government workers, I think he very well could have been reelected. But I warned people then that things could very well get worse if he was voted out and they indeed have.

As a state employee for the past 20 years, I'd sure like to know where all this fricken money goes because I'll guarantee you one thing, it isn't in hiring or even retaining employees in the offices where services are needed and expected. The short handedness in the state government offices is by far, the worst shortage of staff I have ever seen.

20 years.... and nothing comes even close. I just got back from hanging out with a friend of mine and she was telling me the stack of foreclosures in one of the tri-county area offices is UNFRICKEN REAL. She flat out told me.... we haven't seen anything yet.

I realize education is an important expense but there is so much waste in the educational system I could scream. Don't believe me, go dumpster diving on the last few days of school, and I say this because I do believe expenses could have been cut in some areas. He should have gone over that budget with a fine tooth comb and if it wasn't money spent for roads, state services (tax collectors, law enforcement, etc.) or education the expense should have been cut. I am starting to think things ARE going to get worse. Much worse.

I agree with you that City and State Government Employees can be seriously underpaid depending on what position they hold. I worked for the Norfolk City Treasurer's Office in VA starting when I was 20 and got to watch my Boss and the City Council get nice high raises while the rest of barely got 1% raises if we were lucky. Then they tore down housing projects to build extravagant ball fields and lavish houses but nobody ever solved the problem of where the people in the housing projects were supposed to go so now Norfolk is sliding rapidly downhill and that money was spent for nothing as those nice things are being trashed by resentful people.

pfft, who cares about tobacco tax? It's not like they're necessary.

True but think about this. Anywhere in Md you are rarely if ever more than 50 miles from a state line. DE already has no sales tax and VA will be lower. All these jackasses have done is cause people to trek to the state line to shop and buy cigarettes. the only people who are chuckling over their windfall should be VA and DE.

Doesn't matter. The undocumented workers will register to vote when they get their Maryland drivers license. They'll vote for the guy that gave them de-facto legal status, feeds and educates their kids, pays their doctor bills and tells the cops to leave them alone.

Umm...

How can they vote if they are not US citizens?

you don't have to show proof of legal status to vote, you just have to show valid maryland ID. so, if they can get a maryland driver's license, they can vote.

I'm gonna have to quit smoking.
three months and 12 days for me now.

and if I were to be a smoker, Im sure I would not check the internet for discount cigarettes from indian reservations.

certainly would not think of getting around that $2.00 per pack tax by purchasing my cartons from the net at about 33.00 per carton.
I would never think to look for deals like this

<table align="center" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="400"><tbody><tr><td width="20">

</td> <td>Marlboro Red pack

<table class="prices" bgcolor="#fafafa" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%"> <tbody><tr> <td>1 carton </td> <td>$17.84

That would just be wrong.. so, I would never share the site with anyone in Maryland either.

Since they can cross the border, get a drivers liscense, get a job without a SSN, register their kids for school and sign up for welfare, why would it be difficult to register to vote?

Actually you just have to show an ID, who is to say it is valid or not. Since I registered I have never been asked to prove who I am at the polls.

and since you cant question anyones identity at the polls, Illegra Lanscaperez will be safe to vote as many times in as many places as his little fence hopping butt desires.

It depends on how far from the border someone might be. With gas sitting around $3 per gal, they would have to do some math to see if it's worth the gas and the extra time. Yes, time. I don't know about everyone else but my time is valuable.

Gas is cheaper in Virginia. Get some while you are down there.

It's cheaper in the part across the 301 bridge
That's 40 miles from Lexington Park.
So that trip would cost aprox $15 in gas (give or take depending on vehicle). Would the tax saving offset that? Plus one must figure the two hours of their time that's lost as well. How much do you value your time at? If the VA tax is that much lower, it might be worth it but I don't know. Maybe if someone make a "cig" run about once a month and stocks up, that might make it worthwhile.
