So that trip would cost aprox $15 in gas (give or take depending on vehicle). Would the tax saving offset that? Plus one must figure the two hours of their time that's lost as well. How much do you value your time at? If the VA tax is that much lower, it might be worth it but I don't know. Maybe if someone make a "cig" run about once a month and stocks up, that might make it worthwhile.

What kind of gas hog do you drive?
At 25mpg, you're talking a little over 3 gallons. There will soon be about a $20 a carton difference in price for cigs. One carton and you're ahead of buying them locally.

Virginia cigarette tax is 30 cents. $1.70 per pack less than MD will be. Gas is typically 10 cents cheaper per gallon. I think that legally, you can buy a carton of cigs, so that's $17 saved on smokes and about $2 on a tank of gas

short of infrastructure and defense, the government has no place in any of societies issues.

Not quite correct. What you said is true of the Federal government. The State is free to do all the social programs they want as long as it is allowed in the state constitution and doesn't violate the US Constitution.

You're right. I redid the figures. I think I hit a wrong key or hit something twice by mistake.

Legally, you can buy all you want, you just can't legally bring more than 2 packs back to MD.
:yeahthat: MD Comptroller:
Maryland residents can bring no more than two packs of untaxed cigarettes into Maryland, while nonresidents passing through are limited to one carton. Cigarettes that don’t bear the proper Maryland tax stamps may be seized as contraband, along with any vehicle used in transporting the untaxed cigarettes.

I guess, from a legal standpoint, the most one can save is $3.40 in cig tax and $2 on a tank of gas. It cost between $7 and $8 worth of gas to go from LP to Dahlgren and back so one would be spending $7 to save $5.40. Oh. I almost forgot, there's a bride toll going south bound. $2 I think. So now one is spending $9 to save $5.40 coming from LP. Of course if you're in LaPlata or south, you might break even.

Dontcha just love it?

They want to tax it through the roof, then make it illegal for you to go anywhere else and get it.

When the smoking ban kicks in, I wonder if they'll make it illegal to eat at a restaurant outside of MD. :bubble:

They will probably require you to get a "MD" tatoo or something that way the wait staff can check and see if you are authorized to buy the #5 at Wendys over in VA.

There has been no enforcement against small quantity importers.

YET

They will probably hire 100 fully equipped MD Customs officers with cars to check at the borders. It will cost $50M to try and stop you from saving $30 on gas and smokes.

Do they ever really enforce this? I know they sometimes have crackdowns on fireworks coming in from VA but that's just focused around the weeks leading up to July 4th.

This is from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette

More than 4,300 Pennsylvania buyers were targeted last week. The Revenue Department says these buyers alone owe $10 million in uncollected cigarette taxes since January 2005.

The state says it is targeting the people who have purchased at least 100 cartons because it figured anybody who bought that many cigarettes might be reselling them for profit.

But plenty of people hit with the unexpected bills have said that was not the case. A couple from Washington County, who bought cigarettes for their own use, will owe about $3,000 in taxes and penalties. An 82-year-old Pittsburgh-area man bought more than 400 cartons over the years; his excise taxes alone will come to $5,000. Sales taxes will be another $500 or more. Penalties could be $3,000.

Yet another woman told the Post-Gazette she owed $3,854. The state told her she'd have to pay 10 percent upfront, then about $150 a month over two years, to work off her debt. When she told the state she couldn't make such a large payment, she said she was informed that the state could place a lien on her home.

You laugh, but that's how it works. They make these control-freak laws, then spend millions of our tax dollars enforcing them.

I would love to know what their rationalization is for prohibiting MD residents from purchasing cigarettes in another state. This is a legal substance, not unlike Coca Cola or Triscuits or Little Debbie brownies. So should we be prohibited from buying those in VA as well?

I think we all know the real reason is that they don't wanting us circumventing their loony tax, but I'd be curious if anyone would actually have the guts to say that?
