Md Passes largest tax hike in history.

notice that the premise for the article is that raising taxes PROMOTES this black market system. if the maryland government was concernd with avoiding the use of cigarettes to fund illegal activity, they wouldn't have raised the tax!

But that is why even in states that have low taxes they are limiting the amount you can take across state lines.

That MD is still far from being the most over taxed state.

Just ask a New Yorker or Californian.

Heck, even red-by-gawd Tennessee's sales tax is way more than ours!

TN has no income tax.

I don't and wont live in California or NY.

We're not talking about buying items from the back of Guido's truck. We're talking about picking up a carton of smokes in VA. According to MD law, 3 packs makes you a tax evader.
The ONLY reason for that is the money.
I'm surprised this isn't protected by interstate commerce clauses in the Constitution. I can see the state having a problem with folks bringing a truck load of smokes but only being allowed two packs? That's overboard.

So, if another country is taxed more, it's ok to raise the US rates because somebody else gets taxed more?

I live in MD. I don't give a flying f&#$ how much another state taxes their subjects. Actually, I take that back. I look at states with low taxes and think about moving there. I can't say that I'd look at a state with higher taxes and think of moving there.

State Sales Tax Rates

Eek! Look how many tax food!

the site you linked to uses the "old" rate of 5%. If you look at comparisons using the new rate, you'll see that we are 29th in the nation for sales tax but HIGHEST in the nation for local income tax and 4th highest for cigarette tax.

In the state of Maryland, considering the steal from the working to give to the poor mantality, I would encourage people to purchase anywhere but Maryland.
lets hurt the state as much as we can. Lets squeeze right back.
There are 50 states out there to choose from. If someone hates MD that much, they can do some research, find a state that meets there needs, and MOVE there.

Perspective deary....

It's more than we are used to paying, but some states pay more, ALOT more in sales tax than we do. Many "red states" not only have higher sales tax, but also tax things like food and otc medicines.

Yes, some states don't have income tax, but they get their revenue other ways. Either they tax other things more heavily or they cut services.

I'm no fan of O'Malley- here's a shock- I actually voted for Ehrlich :faint:. But he didn't just create the state's deficit by taking the oath of office.

No he created it by proposing more spending.

It's not that one may hate Maryland as much as they are no longer being able to afford it.

From my stand point, I don't earn enough to be hit by the increase on income taxes. As far as sales tax, that'll hit me. If I buy $200 of clothes for the boys, it'll be an extra $2. As far as the cig tax, that an easy one to fix, quit smoking. $0 tax.

Why should my legal choices be required to change? Couldn't Maryland change the way it just gives money away to the undeserving instead of making those willing to take care of themselves pay for those that aren't.

I'm in the same boat. I also earn extra $ by selling stuff on ebay, mostly gleened from off price stores, second hand shops, etc so that bit of extra sales tax does effect my income slightly-like an extra 1% markup on everything I sell. Property taxes were supposed to go down some (???) but that would not have affected me.

Oh- and I did have a state sales tax license for a while. My purpose was to have access to wholesalers, but I had maybe 2 winning bidders that year from MD. The Comptroller's office actually made me write a check for 50 cents and wasted no telling sending me nastygrams in the mail telling me to cough it up. :killingme

I agree that it would be money well spent for the state (and the feds for the matter) to do a real audit of everyone currently recieving any sort of assistance to weed out the ones who are abusing the system. They could also put limits on the allowable duration of assitance, sort of like the limits put on unemployment payments.

Politics are NOT about doing what's right or the common good. They're about power, money and personal profit.
Vote for me and you won't have to work, I'll see that you get fed, have a plce to live and smoe walking around money.
You don't want to work?
No problem, there are plenty of folks that do and if you vote for me, I'll make sure you get some of their earnings.
You want the contract to build a bridge or road?
No problem, just make a few "contributions to my campaign.
Ever know of a politician that lost money in office?

But cigarettes are not a necessity. That is why they are a favorite item to raise taxes on. .

How do you feel when you see one of these "undeserving" buying a pack of cigarettes with money that could be going towards their rent or medical bills?

Not everyone who has to use social services is a JPC. Some of us have worked hard all our lives but still had periods where that tiny bit of help kept us from having to sleep in our car. I would rather pull out my i-teeth with a pair of rusty pliers than deal with DSS again.

Legally, you can buy all you want, you just can't legally bring more than 2 packs back to MD.
:smack: That's what I meant and you know it... only 2 packs? That's just stupid. I never smoked, beyond teenage experimenting, but I don't know many people who only ever bought a pack or two at a time.

Well, that just means you have to get a little further from the bridge before you turnaround and go home... the state police may have slacked off a little watching for contraband cigs, but you know they are gonna be more diligent again.
