Well, that just means you have to get a little further from the bridge before you turnaround and go home... the state police may have slacked off a little watching for contraband cigs, but you know they are gonna be more diligent again.

Buy the cigs, go have lunch in Colonial Beach then drive home. Pretty soon, you'll be able to play slots there again.

But cigarettes are not a necessity. That is why they are a favorite item to raise taxes on.
I never said they were necessary, just a legal activity should one choose. Taxation should be a shared burden and not one isolated on the few for the benefit of the undeserving.

How do you feel when you see one of these "undeserving" buying a pack of cigarettes with money that could be going towards their rent or medical bills?
How can one tell if they are undeserving at a check out register? And if I had a choice between paying bills or buying smokes I would pay the bills, but not everyone is like that.

Not everyone who has to use social services is a JPC. Some of us have worked hard all our lives but still had periods where that tiny bit of help kept us from having to sleep in our car. I would rather pull out my i-teeth with a pair of rusty pliers than deal with DSS again.
I didn't say they were or even implied that, but don't you admit that there are many receiving benefit that do not deserve to and if they would get off their lazy asses they wouldn't be on the dole either and thus working folk could keep a little more of their hard earned cash for themselves.

I am sure the folks running the Purple Heart stores I buy most of my stuff from would not find that joke very funny.

Neither would the Feds dealing with bootleggers.
You're the one comparing Joe Blow driving to VA and picking up a couple of cartons of cigs to guys loading up trucks in NC and selling them in NYC.

Isn't capitalism wonderful? When an opportunity to make a profit is created by an oppressive government, people take advantage of it. Government prohibition of alcohol in the '20s-'30s enabled the growth of organized crime and it looks like oppressive taxes are doing the same today.

There are many people who sit on welfare and do nothing, but they are not the majority. Dealing with a welfare office is one of the most degrading things you could ever experience. It's been years since I had any type of assistance, and you would be suprised how much I had to crawl to even get $30 a month in food stamps. Yep- that was living high on the hog with my then $6.50 an hour job. Oops...in my case it was high on the lentils. :p

No, I am saying that is one other reason- besides revenue- WHY there are restrictions on how many packs/cartons you can bring in from another state. Yes, the two pack thing is ridiculously low, but with the Russian mob to worry about I seriously doubt the State or Feds will waste their time on someone hauling home a couple cartons over the Nice Bridge.

But I will point out that these online cigarette sellers may be getting their supply illegally and using the profits to fund even more illegal operations. Know who you are buying from is all I am saying.

That MD is still far from being the most over taxed state.

Just ask a New Yorker or Californian.

Heck, even red-by-gawd Tennessee's sales tax is way more than ours!

State Sales Tax Rates

Eek! Look how many tax food!
So it's ok, that MD goes from 24th in taxes to 11th?

Plus that chart is over simplified... Maryland charges tax on cooked food and "snack" food. Some states don't. Some states don't charge tax on clothes.

If they want to tax something, they should tax junk food. Poor people should be eating something more nutritious anyway, so if you jack the tax on junk food way up, then only the rich will be able to afford it. Which is as it should be.

That processed junk is usually the cheapest stuff you can buy :dead:.

I learned how to jazz up lentils, ramen noodles, and oatmeal quite well when I was seriously broke.

I dont care where my state stands in ranking; I only want my taxes to be wisely used, and fairly distributed.

I am from CA, and my MD taxes are as high as I paid in San Diego, but my schools, roads, and other services are much better (tho the roads are more crowded, and drivers ruder).
I am a native TN, and they have no state income tax, hence the high sales tax. And Hoo Hoo intake...
Mom is in FL;; I am glad my kids are not being raised there. No state income tax. Crowded and hot. Toll roads amuk. Did I mention hot? Terri Schaivo fascists...
We have a deficit. Either reduce services, or raise taxes. Enforce laws on the books (teen drivers, anyone?)! And if u are unhappy; move on.

And if we got "the many" off the dole would we have to keep increasing taxes? No one is talking about those in true need and deserving of assistance only those "playing" the system.

Cheeze wizz and lentils :yahoo:

Ick no!

Lentils (about 3 cups), can of DelMonte Garlic and Herb spagetti sauce (99 cents), and water in the crock pot overnight. Stir in a square pack of frozen chopped spinach at the end until it gets hot. Sprinkle on some parm cheese if you like. Dinner for a week for around $2.
