New Businesses Coming to Southern Maryland

Weis and Food Lion are high end for SoMD.
You should have seen the heads exploding in Dunkirk when the Harris-Teeter was going to be a Piggly Wiggly a few months ago. That merger was ended but it was fun to watch.
Then a Dollar Tree opened up today, when that was announced a group of Dunkirkites were going to sue the County. That didn't happen. I don't know if they were from Inner Dunkirk or Outer Dunkirk (yes, that's a thing now).
I'm so upset that we don't have a Wegmans, Trader Joes's, or Whole Foods in SMC, I'm moving to Appalachia.

Food Lion in Leonardtown is really nice. They have prices lower than Walmart and a lot of brands you normally only get at Giant.
It's a shame Food Lion was replaced with Weis. Weis is more expensive and has a more limited selection. There was a Weis in the town I lived in NJ, and the place was always empty. Would love to have a Shop Rite here.

I try hard to explain to my kids, especially my youngest that businesses are built in response to market forces - and market research. And permits. I explain that the county doesn’t need a Tim Horton’s or another Panda Express because you would like to see it. It does so because someone WHO HAS MONEY to invest has deduced that such an enterprise would make money.

Because like a lot of people - she doesn’t know who the magical “they” are. She will say “they” need to put in a McDonalds down the street - and I sigh and ask who “they” - is.

It’s ok. I used to think - as a teenager - that the government had its own revenue stream through arms deals and technology. I never DREAMED we were GIVING it away.

FWIW I would like to see this Ukraine deal that says, equipment for rare earths. No free rides.

Nailed it! I post virtually the same response to every "we need this not that" bullcrap response that shows up on the various forums.

It includes any and every business.
I know. But trying to explain that to many people is like talking to a mentally retarded wall. That includes in Calvert Home Depot, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, various high end retailers and luxury car dealers. Bayside in Prince Frederick used to sell Cadillacs. They dropped that marque years ago. For a reason.

I laugh when someone says that we need a Wegman's. What makes people think that the economy of St. Mary's County would support a Wegmans? We had 3 Shoppers Food, and they failed. While the selection is very different, Shoppers prices were lower, and they failed. No one would continuously shop at Wegmans when all of the other options are much cheaper for the same items. Not in So Md anyway. Don't get me wrong, I like Wegmans, I shop there occasionally. not on a regular basis though.

Never been. I have been to HT a handful of times. It's nice, but expensive.

I was just told that I should change "mentally retarded wall" to "cognitively challenged wall". Ok.
You should have seen the heads explode a few months ago when it looked like the Harris Teeter in Dunkirk was going to change to Piggly Wiggly. A Dollar Tree opened up a couple days ago and the Dunkirk people are already worried about their property values. I think I mentioned that earlier.

I go there a lot. I go to several for different reasons. HT has a very good produce selection, their checkers actually understand the process for water bottle exchange, they have lots of good hot food and their cashiers are super polite and will pull your cart to an open register.

Their meat department leaves a lot to be desired as does their actual bakery, and their bread selection is weak. But just about ANYTHING you want will be there.

But yeah, it is a little more expensive and navigation in and out of the parking lot if you need to head north on 235 is awful.

I can't imagine shopping for a family of 5 there.

I only buy certain things there, and usually just when it’s on sale. For example if you get there at the right time - lots of ground beef for 1.99 a pound. There’s almost always some coffee greatly discounted.

Usually buy stuff from Giant, but I do get stuff like bagged cereal from DG or milk and eggs and butter from ALDI.

I go there if I can't find something I need elsewhere. Or they have something I use that is a seriously sale price.
