P90X, I love it

Hard to find that "perfect" food that's low on everything.
Most of what I've made lately has been low on flavor too. I cannot make anything taste good anymore without cheeses and sauces and bread. Even burgers on the grill, just aren't the same without the buns. I almost wish I couldn't taste anything anymore...:cds:

How much do you weigh????? That is a redic amount of calories...

Currently @ 185~186. I'm averaging around 2000-2100 cals a day then workout everyday which averages 650-700 cals per session.

ARX is getting better and better! Fifer scissors and mason twists are starting to come along nicely too. Staring to see the changes already.

Skip the P90X drink mix, it's too expensive. Got to Wal-Mart or BJ's and pick up some whey protein drink mix. There is a small amount of creatine in the P90X mix which helps with muscle building, but you can take a supplement in the form of a tablet and get the same amount of creatine.

Here is the recipe for my after workout drink (when I was working out regularly)

1 scoop of whey
1 scoop of Ovaltine chocolate drink mix
1 banana
2 strawberries
14 ozs milk
double handful of ice

Blend well and drink up. You should try to get this down within 30-60 minutes of your workout.

Alright - my boy was just mixing the whey protein in with milk. He said it was yucky but drank it anyway. This actually sounds so much better. Thanks for posting. I think he could mix this up in the evening for a quick a.m. grab, whatcha think?

Yes he can. Just mix right before he goes to bed and stick it in the fridge. Also, if he's out of whey protein, he could have a glass of chocolate milk after his workouts to help with the recovery process. BUT, it's gotta be something like Ovaltine, NOT a syrup. Just compare the labels and you'll see why.

Ohh, and tell him to,"Do the damn yoga."-Tony Horton It can be a PITA because of the length but he'd be surprised at just how many calories you burn and how good you feel after doing it, especially if you can do it in a quiet area with no distractions. (No 2 1/2 yo coming in and doing WWE body splashes on you.)

Thanks - great information.

I have one more question and I thought I posted it last night because it was on my mind but I guess I didn't.

What weight - weights are you all using? I only have 5, 10, & 15 pound hand weights. Should he be using something heavier?

It depends on what his goals are. Does he want to be lean and defined or bulky? Lifting for definition means higher reps of lower weights and for size, higher weights less reps bulk. I'm using anywhere from 12# up to 46# DEPENDING UPON THE EXERCISE. Tony will preface every exercise with a "you may want to go heavier' or "you may want to go lower'". Some of the routines you HAVE to have a lighter weight (straight arm shoulder work) and some he may be able to go heavy (I go heavy with calf raises).

After he has decided what he is looking for as an end result he'll need to tailor his diet to suit his goals. But that's a whole other can of worms.

I had a minor setback last week but I am now back in the program and proceeding into week 8. I got really sick last Monday while helping an elderly lady friend of mine! Doesn't it figure? I caught that bug Monday and was off the program from Wednesday-Sunday! :jameo: It felt like I had broken glass in my lungs and I couldn't even lift my weights. :yikes:

The good news is that my abs got a rocking 5 day workout from all the coughing I did day & night. I was literally doing sit ups in bed. I might patent it and call it "Ab Ripper Xtreme Coughing Version"... :killingme
I have better results with heavy weights. Load your muscles...
:yay: they try to get women to do the whole "low weight, high rep" thing..but it's basically useless, no matter what your goal is. Heaviest weight you can handle, rep to failure.
:jameo: No ladies, PLEASE! Do the less weight type exercises. Stick with the smaller weights because some of us honestly appreciate what it does for you...me...

Half way through the program my son sliced his hand open and had to get 12 stitches. There was no way he could do the weights until that healed, so he decided once he healed he'd just start from day one.

If a gal wants to tone, she has to load her muscles and work with heavy weights. Cardio (lots of it) is important, too. Light weights will NOT do anything.

Still pushing play here ...
My ARX numbers are coming up and I can almost keep up with the kids on that one. I'm feeling good, the goo is going bye bye and I've re discovered my lower abs.

Yep. I'm coming to the end of week 10. Haven't seen any changes since week 6 though. Guess my protein intake isn't high enough but I'm doing the weight work. I get a lot of compliments on how hard my upper body is, so that's a good thing.(I get hugs from a lot of people, btw)....

Week 2

Hi to all the X'ers on here. I am in the middle of week 2, doing yoga tonight. I started back up after being overzealous and trying to keep up with "peg leg" right out of the box in January. Needless to say, pride got in the way and I was layed up with strains and pulls everywhere for a while...

Anyway, I am back at it and feeling pretty good. Using discretion, but still pushing hard every night. My question is, when will I start to see any results on the scale? My arms, chest and abs are showing signs of change already but the scale is NOT MOVING!! How long was it until you started to drop weight?

Found a great website called myfitnesspal.com which is basically a calorie counter that has a huge database with everything you could want to eat as well as exercise counter. Its free and relatively easy to use.

Muscle weighs more than fat. I saw results in the mirror long before I saw results on the scale. I'm down over 20 pounds and feeling great. Will probably go another round with the program once things aren't so hectic here.

When you will see results depends on a lot of things.

The more you have to lose, the faster you will see results. Also it depends on your gender, age, and diet among other factors.

You need to manage your expectations with this program. It is not a miracle fix-all. You will get out what you put in, but it takes time to work. You might not see any pounds drop until the third month. You might even gain weight. But if you drop body fat, that's a good thing.

Many people get discouraged with P90X because they don't lose weight "fast enough." The results will come, just be patient. I always think of my current exercise in future terms. That is, the workout I do today will yield results next week, or next month, or later. That goes for what I eat too.

I've been doing P90X consistently since around Thanksgiving and I'm currently in my second time through. I've lost about 6-8% body fat in that time. What I weigh doesn't matter because I'm improving my body composition. I've also improved my blood pressure, cholesterol, and liver study, none of which show up on my bathroom scale but are directly related to improved fitness and health.

One piece of advice to keep in mind, and maybe you already learned this after your first attempt... just do the best that YOU can in each exercise. Don't get discouraged if you can't keep up with the people on the disc. If you could, you wouldn't need P90X. They are there to show you what to strive for, not what you should be able to do. You'll get better at everything over time.

I could not do any pull ups on day 1. Now I can do about 4 in a row, and I still can barely do any wide pull ups without a chair. Plyo is an intense workout. If you burn yourself out after the first circuit, and you can't do any of the rest, you don't get as much out of it as you would if you paced yourself and worked less intensely for the whole hour.

I hope this helps. I recommend checking out the P90X facebook page or the beachbody website. Both places have lots of good discussions and advice.

I use myfitnesspal, but you have to input your P90X exercises each time. I've labeled them all as cardio so I can input my calorie burn. Definitely use an HR monitor they are loads of help, and if you feel the dvd isn't enough, try doing some high intensity cardio on your lifting/resistance days.:yay:

I'm on week 8 recovery now and I'm really looking forward to day 90 because the 11 lbs I've lost so far looks pretty good. (at least that's what the LW says)
