Shooting of Gay Student Sparks Outcry

Well I suppose if I'm out with my gay friends I can let them continuously be gay bashed... especially if there's drinking involved and it can escalate in to violence...

Have you ever had your roommate collapse on you at 3 am because his boyfriend had just gotten the crap beat out of him in the middle of the street simply because he was gay? Seriously... that much blood is enough to wake someone up right away... not to mention having to be emotional support for your best friend while taking care of his boyfriend because he's just not capable of it at the time...

Homosexuality is my hot button soap box issue... it's probably the one area I fly off the handle way too easily.
No, I've never had a gay roommate. Not one that advertised it, anyway.

Oh for crying out loud...

Look. I am officially against anybody being shot for any reason.

I am also against one murder being more outrageous than the other. We want equality? We want acceptance?

Fine...me too!!!

Murder is murder. Whether it's racial, sexist, homophopic, or xenophobic. (Not too sound too Jesse Jackson-y.)

That's why I hate "Hate Crime" legislation...or anything similar. Why is it worse if a straight guy shoots a gay guy??? does that mean that a straight guy shooting a straight guy is less of an injustice????

Frakking stupid. Murder is murder. Violence is violence. If we want to be one country...treat us all the same.

Well it's never fun to wake up at 3 am to a phone call that says "Can you meet me at the door with a wet towel?" It's even less fun to open up the apartment door to having someone collapse on you in tears as you look behind them to see a battered and bloody person.

I would imagine that would be equally traumatic regardless of his/her sexual affiliation...yes?

It may very well be...

But if you found out the person who got beat up was beat up simply because of who they loved and how they had sex... wouldn't you get just a *little* pissed off?

I'd be just as mad about that as I would be if they were beat up for being white...or black...or Asian...or rich...or poor.

I just don't get the whole "hate crime" BS. If somebody beats the crap out of somebody...isn't that "hate"?

Treat 'em all the same.

We need stronger penalties for all violence crimes...all around. We need a broadening of the death penalty. We need universal punishment for gun crimes.

We don't need to differentiate between why somebody had violence inflicted upon them...we need to get much tougher against those that use violence for criminal activity.

We actually discussed this in my sociology class 2 weeks ago.

The arguements were much the same... where were the parents? Wasn't the gay student asking for retaliation because he dressed the way he did? How can this sort of thing be prevented?

This story makes my blood boil and makes me see red in all it's various hues. At what point does it become ok to kill someone simply because you disagree with their lifestyle? At what point does it become an actual thought in the mind of someone and they think it's ok?

Could the boy have been spared had he not "flaunted his apparent gayness"? Sure, probably... but why should he have to hide who he is? Are you going to tell girls they can't wear high heels and make up to school? If you're not going to enforce such a rule with the girls you can't enforce it with the boys.

What is and is not socially acceptable is becoming a blurred line. The only way to prevent such tragedies from happening is to educate and learn to tolerate eachother, differences or no... and parents who are biased against things they do not understand cannot teach it.

It is human nature to destroy what we cannot understand, so the only solution is to educate ourselves and make an attempt to understand.

:yeahthat:

A fine balance of tolerance and structure is needed, everywhere in the world.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if the McInerney kid was having conflicting thoughts with regard to his own sexual orientation which is why the little gay boy freaked him out to the point of putting a bullet in his head.

Psychology 101. :yay:

very true!

Well...

Why Vrai?

...personal safety for one. Simple manners for another. People getting along is a two way street. We don't live in a constitutional laboratory where every right and liberty is acted out on the safety of a piece of paper. It's one thing to have a 'Kerry for President' bumper sticker. It is another to have one that says '#### Bush'.

It's one thing to be a hot woman. It is another to walk around in a thong with no top. It's one thing to be gay. It's another to be overtly so. It's one thing to be rich. It is another to walk around with cash falling out of your pockets.

One is well within their rights to have bumper stickers, a great body, to be gay or to be rich. With those rights come obligations, some not necessarily fair, some simple matters of prudence.

That's it!! I'm starting a petition for the picnic table pervert and the dead deer raper and will send them both to you liberals PM'r. Please don't send them cash, make it certified check. :duh:

I mean you gotta teach YOUR kids tolerance right!!

"Look lil Truby, lil Kris, lil Andy, that man is making love to that dead animal. Now we must have tolerance and realize that it's ok for him to do that. He's not weird or anything, he's just different and you have to accept that." "But mommy/daddy, what's the other man doing to the first man?" "Accept it dear, he thinks the first man is a picnic table. Tolerance remember? It's ok if you want to do that when you grow up too."

I pity your children!!! :smack:

No one is trying to justify murder. Someone --his parents, or his teachers-- should have made an effort to explain to this kid that his actions were offensive to others.

If the kid had come to school in klan robes they would have straightened him out fast enough. Some actions are just not acceptable.

...not run to far afield on this thing; murder is far, far worse than bumper stickers, offensive language, making homosexual advances or even a Clay Aiken t shirt.

It's not like this happens every day or it wouldn't be news. This was a 'perfect' storm of two troubled kids who didn't receive enough of the guidance that adults are supposed to provide on top of whatever else may or may not have been troubling them.

:roflmao:

To me this situation is no different than a woman who goes out walking alone in a bad part of town in the middle of the night and gets raped or killed. Shouldn't she be able to do that in complete safety? Ideally she would, but that's not reality. Common sense says she shouldn't have put herself in that situation to begin with.

Allowing your 10 year old to walk a mile to the store alone through a bad neighborhood - same concept. The kid can certainly make their way to the store and back, but there are very few parents these days that would allow that because it's not safe. It's not the kid that's the problem - it's the predators out there that are the problem, and it's stupid to not take basic safety precautions.

So saying that the King kid should have been able to wear lipstick to school and make kissy faces at the boys who were hostile to him is ridiculous. Sure, he SHOULD have been able to, but that's not reality.

Apples and oranges.

There's no law saying you can't be gay. As far as the dead animal thing, absolute :bs: for you to spit that out. There IS a law against that. Besides, that's just :barf: anyway.

I call it as I see it. Gay is here to stay. It's people like you who have their minds in the gutter and think everyone should change their ways to fit one person. It's Un-American.

And, oh yeah, I don't plan on having children. Even if it means being single my whole life. :yay:

Just for the record, I'm not a liberal. I just think parts of the Republican Party have lost touch with what is truly conservative and have let the Bush type wingnuts take over.

Oh gawd.

I'm so sick of it. People who can't be themselves because we've all been brainwashed. You can only be this and anything else is unacceptable. Doesn't that sound like the type of religious extremism that we're fighting over in Iraq and Afghanistan? :jet:
