Shooting of Gay Student Sparks Outcry

Homosexuality is becoming socially acceptable, but there are regional and cultural areas where it is not acceptable. Something that the gay community needs to realize is that they are not blazing a new trail. Long ago, it was not socially acceptable to be non-Christian and people died because of it (Salem witch trials...). Women also had to fight for acceptability as more than just property of the husband and then as more than just homemakers. Not so long ago, blacks were not accepted in society and, among some people, still aren't. There is not question that some have been killed/beaten just for being black and it still happens today. Changing social acceptability takes time and it doesn't happen by force. The "militant" gay community actually hurts the cause by pushing for acceptance of more than just different behavior, but pushing for acceptance of socially freakish behavior. The further and harder you try to push the line of acceptability, the harder the line pushes back.

Good post :yay:

WDF. So worth the wait.
Dead kid acting out of social norms does matter. If he hadn't done it, he'd be alive and that's my opinion. Yes the shooter is at fault, and no the lil gay boy should not have been killed ...BUT... by dressing the way he did and pushing back, he brought more attention to himself thus resulting in his death.
Got it and mostly agree. My point is that what makes his actions so inflammatory. He was being picked on, he picked back. If his girly dress, which hurt no one, was ignored or just tolerated it never would have been an issue. If he tried to mount some kid in the locker room, then his actions play a real role. If he was being harrassed and blew a kiss in response to the harrassment it seems the same as flipping off someone who called you a name.

No one has come close to saying it should be excused. Again, wake up.

I haven't read anything written on this thread saying it should be excused. But, there has been a lot of intolerance on this thread and again the intolerance leads to the violence.

I just checked, there's no stick up my ass.

Did you pull your head out while you were up there rooting around?

You keep insisting that people are excusing the murder, and nobody has said that at all.

And, yes, bullying can result in someone losing their mind and fighting back with a weapon. It doesn't excuse the murder, but it is a reason the murder occurred.

I'm not sure why you're having such a hard time understanding this?

...intolerance. If 'intolerance' defacto lead to violence I would have a dungeon full of American Idle watchers in my basement.

Again, this is all on the adults.

That is a statement of fact that is not correct. I am intollerant of many things but I have yet to beat anyone up or kill them.

Not really. I'm intolerant of the Klan, but I'm not going to shoot one

I was bullied around in middle school as well, but I didn't go shooting off a gun. Granted I did kick some kids azz, and I deserved every part of the punishment I got.

That's what led me to writing. You have no idea how much stress you can relieve by pulling out a keyboard and Microsoft Office Word. My violent weapon is my keyboard - and I use it to write very harsh statements and very blount thoughts.

Best form of anger management out there. :yay:

Well...

I don't want all that weed I smoked to create a fire hazzard situation. :killingme

...perhaps all that weed lead you to look in the wrong place and you may, in fact, have a stick up your azz and not know it? Plus, thought I claim to be no expert, you're not supposed to smoke the weed with your azz; takes longer to get into your blood stream.

Most people don't. However, when you go around trying to provoke a fight, there is that occasion where you may get one that you didn't bargain for.

So what's your point?

Perhaps my head's just in the wrong place this morning. :killingme

Did he try to provoke a fight?

Do we have two sides swinging fists at each other?

If we did, no harm no foul. Instead, we've got one cowardice thug firing his gun off killing someone else. That's not a provoked fight, that's murder with intent.

:yeahthat: (mostly)

I think in the 80's the militant gay community played an important part in bringing attention to the AIDS situation; groups like ACT UP gave a nudge to the medical community to help with getting momentum toward finding treatments to a disease that now infects over 30 million persons worldwide.
