Stray Friendly Young Boxer - HELP PLEASE

Well seems the time has come to get Boxy to the vet to discuss his eye. Catt and the 1st vet to see Boxy said that Boxy's eye should probably be sewn shut. Boxy likes to run and play, thereby kicking up some dust in the process that sometimes ends up in his bad eye.

Boxy's eye will be evaluated this week. The next step will be to schedule him for surgery. Boxy's caregiver won't be able to afford to help much with the financial end of the surgery, so we will be fundraising to get help to cover Boxy's surgery cost. As soon as we find out the amount, I will pass that information along here.

Boxy is a special boy. So many of you have been rooting for Boxy for about a year now, time flies huh? I am so glad that we were able to help Boxy. He's really a good boy.

I would like to contribute Ark, let me know what you come up with.

I took Boxy to a vet known for being experienced with Boxers and handling dogs that don't like vets (recommended to me by Catt).

Boxy had been shaking his head and it seems Boxy has an ear infection, poor baby. The vet did his shots and he is still testing positive for Lyme, so he is going to get another course of antibiotics, and had a Lyme vaccine yesterday, and will get a booster in 2 weeks. His fecal was negative for parasites. It doesn't take long to add up, and yesterday Boxy's bill was $373.70.

The vet said that she wasn't able to get a good look into his bad eye, so when he goes back in 2 weeks for his Lyme booster, she will make a determination as to whether she recommends surgery, but said probably so.

The prior vets who saw him did not think he had en eyeball in there (Boxy is difficult to vet), but this vet was able to see the "globe" back in there (Boxy was partially sedated). So she wants to sedate him fully to get a better look at the inside of the eye before making a final determination. In the past the prior vets viewed closing the eye as merely a cosmetic thing, but with this discovery that there is an eye still in there (she called the globe), this new vet she wants to be sure by sedating him to do a thorough evaluation into the eye socket in 2 weeks.

The vet ultimately decided that Boxy does not need to have his eye sewn shut. It has been hard to get weight on Boxy, but keeping him indoors a lot during Winter has helped since he isn't burning off so many calories running like he does outside. Boxy is a happy boy!

What a handsome boy!!

That he is ! For some reason the special cases seem to FIND me somehow LOL. He won't need to see the vet again until next year for his annual shots. I know now that if I see him shaking his head he needs to get checked for an ear infection (I was thinking ear mites).

His caretaker has been working 12 to 14 hour days, 6 days a week, and hasn't had much time for Boxy lately. He suggested maybe Boxy would do better in another home so he could get more attention. We'll see if a suitable match comes along. In the meantime, I let Boxy take me for a walk just about every day.

Call me whatever you wish, but I am still holding out hope that someone will come forward to claim Boxy. Someone cared enough to teach him things, and I keep thinking that maybe he belonged to a service member that ended up being deployed and left Boxy with someone, and Boxy got loose? If I did find the real family/person, I would surely cry to see Boxy leave, but they would be tears of sadness that I would miss him and tears of joy that he was able to be with his long lost family/person.

I want to be sure that no one out there is looking for Boxy so I re-posted a few of the lost dog ads I posted back in late 2011 and early 2012 when I was searching for Boxy's family. So if you see an ad about Boxy, yes I did that.

Anyone have experience with long eared Boxers and ear infections? Is there a particular antibiotic that works orally? or does he have to keep going back to the vet for the ear packs? (he won't let you put drops in his ears). I am watching him closely and he shakes his head every so often, but not as much as he did before when I had him treated for an ear infection. So I am not sure he has an ear infection. I told the volunteer to stop spraying his head/face with the hose when he gets overheated when playing outside. I think maybe the water was getting into his ears and causing a problem?

Yes - he had good intentions, but he doesn't have much time for him as he works in construction and he has been working long days, and is usually only off on Sunday - so Boxy sees more of ME than him.

I do not know why I keep feeling that someone out there is missing Boxy. Maybe it's true or maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part to hope that someone really CARED about him? Maybe they didn't?

I wonder where he came from. He has that tattoo on his belly to indicate that he had been neutered. I don't know of any local shelters or rescues that use a tattoo like that.

I am hoping that once we get our non-profit status that we will get more donations so we can build an exercise area for Boxy to run free in that he can't jump out of. He needs a way to get more exercise, and hopefully not by chasing the horses LOL. He STILL wants to chase the horses (sigh).

So many dogs and cats get processed it would be impossible to know where he came from w/o a chip and he doesn't seem to have one. Don't most shelters chip the dogs now?
