Trump won’t help Puerto Rico

It took him 9 days. You don't think that's slow to do something that helps provide aid?

The Jones Act is an archaic law that forced shipping costs to almost double in some cases when shipping to PR or Hawaii.

That's what Unions do........

Makes you wonder why Trump hasn't pressured congress to get rid of it altogether instead of just 10 days.
Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke said the waiver will be in effect for 10 days and will cover all products being shipped to Puerto Rico, according to a release from the department.

Because....
“We’re thinking about that,” Mr. Trump told reporters when asked if he would lift restrictions on foreign vessels’ operations, “but we have a lot of shippers and a lot of people... who work in the shipping industry that don’t want the Jones Act lifted. And we have a lot of ships out there right now.”

In fact you did all those things in this vet thread and the one about taking a knee

People are dying in PR. But let’s talk about illegals voting. How many people have died in PR, compared to say Houston or Florida.. How many have died since the storm passed??

Blacks are being harshly treated and sometimes killed by police. Let’s talk about the disrespect to the flag! Only blacks are being treated harshly and killed by police, or is it your belief ONLY Black Lives Matter??

Do you see how stupid you sound? Yes, I definitely see how stupid you sound.

Man up and face the facts. You are a racist. Apparently you are, since you seem to be the only one bringing race into the discussion..

to Your last point I have no idea what you are taking about. When did that happen?

What else you got Dumbledore?

Because I want a wall. And I want tax reform. And I want a whole bunch of other stuff before Trump goes worrying about crap for Puerto Rico.

Good luck with either of those things. You see how well they handled health care. Don’t hold your breath

And Alaska and Hawaii.

This isn't just about Puerto Rico and your wishes don't trump something that is easier to fix than it is to do what you wish. Especially since there won't be a wall (especially not one Mexico is going to pay for); Trump's own advisor (Gary Cohn) admitted Trump's (9 page long) tax reform package won't guarantee middle class families won't see a tax increase.

We've seen his infrastructure promises go poof. China is not labeled a currency manipulator.

In reality, he's listening to the very people you lamented during his campaign; special interest groups.

Look, I depise Donald Trump. However, since when did people forget how to look past the person and see the action? In this case, he did something good that will help Puerto Rico. Can you at least grant him that?

I guess what I'm saying is that Trump did something that is good and compasionate (I would like to see more of this), so why find something to complain about?

:yay: I feel the same as you about Trump. I do, however, believe he is a patriot. He can't win for losing; so to speak. There is a 'yuge' swamp that can't be drained any time soon. Probably not in his life time. He is giving it the old college try, though.

God bless America. :patriot:

Nope. That strays from the narrative: Trump is a racist and wants people of color to die. I wandered off rt 4 the other day to a remote side road and saw one of Trump's concentration camps. They were testing out the ovens.

Oh yeah.................. :sarcasm:

Why does it have to start with Trump? This is a federal law, seems to me it would start in the house.

Working in shipbuilding for 30 years, I couldn't begin to count the number of times and ways that people have tried to both strengthen and weaken or eliminate the Jones Act. Regardless, as soon as it is repealed, what little tiny bit that is left of US shipping will be gone soon after.

As for the facts on the ground in PR, it's a bunch of thug union truck drivers holding up distribution of relief ....the Jones Act affected nothing..zippy

Why do you think that, and why is it especially difficult for Puerto Rico? You would think that if the Jones Act was so oppressive it would equally hurt every shipping port in the country.

I don't "think it"; it's the fundamental reason why we still have the Jones Act. US owned, flagged and crewed shipping is non-competitive. Period. Without MSC, US cruise liners, the Cali-Hawaii shipping and a few other exceptions, there would be no US "shipping industry" and all those exist largely due to both Jones Act restriction and, in the case of military sea lift and MPS activities, heavy government subsidies as well.

In a nutshell..the Jones Act keeps our local seamanship school in business too. ;-)

The whole fuss in PR about the Jones Act was a total nothing burger..a red herring. There was no "flood" of non Jones Act carried product held off. That was all utter BS. I'm sure that's why Trump did eventually issue the waiver; he didn't issue it initially because it was a pointless exercise..useless in actual effective. Conversely, that made it "easy" for him to waive it after the uneducated and demagogues fussed about him not doing it.

People are dying in PR. But let’s talk about illegals voting.

People are being enslaved today in Africa by black Muslims, but let's talk about a cop being mean to someone....

Blacks are being harshly treated and sometimes killed by police. Let’s talk about the disrespect to the flag!

Whites are being harshly treated and sometimes killed by police, and in higher proportion than blacks in terms of who is in contact with police, but let's just say black lives matter instead of every life matters and freedom matters.

Do you see how stupid you sound?

No, but I see how stupid you sound.

Man up and face the facts. You are a racist

Not even close, my friend.

to Your last point I have no idea what you are taking about. When did that happen?

The first thing you brought up about PR was that they are citizens. As if that should matter. There are people being killed daily for being a Christian around the world. there are black people being enslaved in Africa right now, because they're available. There are at least hundreds of thousands of women of every color, race, creed, religion, whatever being sold into sexual slavery. But, let's worry about who gets pulled over more.

It's funny before Harvey the MSM was predicting failure in Houston, before Irma the MSM was saying the Trump administration was facing a "test" in Florida. They were praying for failure so they could come out against Trump. The efforts in Florida and Texas were wonderful. Perfect coordination between local and Federal government. MSM just shut the F up and nothing more was said.

Now we have PR were the devastation is horrible and because the local government has no control on finance or Unions and all of a sudden Trump hates brown people. Just like Katrina and Bush. People are dying and its "Trumps" fault.

PR has to look no far than their Socialist government for the failure of a better response to this disaster.
Let the relief supplies get to the people who need them and get politics out of the way. Union thugs are causing people to die, not Trump.......just sayin'

I always forget about them.. Of course I live next to Lundeberg and used to even teach there 25 years ago, so it's the one that immediately comes to mind.

About a dozen other guys and myself were taken on a field trip to the Calhoon Meba building in Baltimore as a senior in HS. I think two guys ending up going. I enlisted..
I should have taken their offer.
