Alright, you've convinced me there. What about the law abiding citizens who see other law abiding citizens with weapons. Do they wait to get shot at or do they shoot first? These are the first folk who will probably come into contact with the killer first.
I'd go for the guy walking around shooting at everybody he sees. The people that are supposed to be in a dorm are probably familiar to the other residents. The gun owners in a closed community are likely to be aware of who the other owners are.
Just like the dopers

I still think there's great potential for mistakes. With that said, if someone with a gun were around in the immediate area things could have been drastically different today.

Fox5 has been on the air since noon about this. I've listened to the reporters questions and can only say they are a sorry lot. They want the answers to everything right now when they need to realize that nobody has all the answers as yet. I realize there is a need to know but once you ask a question and the answer is unknown, why ask it another 15 times. Nobody still alive is there to tell the story so it has to be reconstructed and that just cannot be done in an hour. Reminds me of news broadcasts that say "You heard it here first". Who gives a poop if you reported it first!

The killer is dead so there is no one really to seek vengence, therefore heads are gonna roll at VT. Hopefully good legislative policies are passed, but that is a great hope.

...of course there is, as it should be in a free society. If we liberalize our gun laws there WILL be accidents, there WILL be occasions when someone loses their temper and ends up in jail forever and someone who should have kept their mouth shut is dead. In exchange for that risk, there WILL be less violent crime as there will be law abiding citizens choosing when, where and how they protect themselves and criminals having to wonder if they are about to pick on the wrong man or woman instead of the law abiding wondering if/when/where they may be attacked and the bad guys choosing what, when and where rather risk free.

Seems like an easy choice.

I noticed the same thing during the Q&A session and I also noticed that the reporters seem aggravated that they didn’t have the answers yet. There was one reporter who had an accusatory undertone in his questions almost blaming the police for the death count being so high.

I'm leaning towards this shooter being a student and I want to hear the details about the shooter.

Stay tuned tomorrow at best, maybe a few days or a week.

I figured someone who knew him would be on TV talking about him already.

Well, the media and police haven't released any information other than the killer was an Asian male. Should people start getting on the tube saying they don't know where their Asian male friend is?

...was a fire and 33 dead and 22 badly burned, there would be an outcry for tools; sprinklers, fire extinguishers, maybe some axes and hoses. TOOLS.

There is no rational reason that there isn't a shotgun behind glass on every floor in a dorm; in case of emergency; break glass.

Except we do not trust one another and we do not hold ourselves accountable for our actions and behavior.

Perhaps we still live in a Hobbesian world, or perhaps we only think we do.

Ok. We're not crazy people that fight to the death over a place in line at the store. The vast majority of people go through life, day after day and don't even know of anyone hurt or attacked. About 2,500,000 Americans die, every year and the vast majorty of them don't die a violent death.
