Their mascots were "Burger Chef and Jeff". I still have a big plastic yellow frying pan they gave once.

Incrediburgible!

There were three Burger Chefs in Pittsfield Mass. when we were growing up, that was our usual 'dinner out' rare are they were. They all closed up shop and I was starting to think I was the only one who remembered them. Then I thought they were just a local/regional thing, guess not.

I remember Morton's. When I was in school, only the low income kids shopped there.

:buttkick: There weren't any Ormonds, Marriannes, and Merry Go Rounds back then, not that I'd shop in them anyway, wrong type clothes, there was no Marlow Hgts, and no Iverson Mall, you had to go into DC to shop, mainly downtown, to Hecht's, Woodies, Lansburgh and Kahn's Deparment Stores.

Did you get Velatis caramels while shopping in Woodies?
(they are back!)

OH my goodiness, they were my favorites use to go into town and get them from their store before even Woodies sold it. They were on 8th or maybe Ninth street in DC between G and F Streets they have since closed the store , I remember waiting in line at the store line was always out the door. Was my Moms favorite we usually only got it around Christmas time. I remember when Woodies started selling it, I just dont think it was as good and they didnot have as many variaties to chose from that the main little store had. But Oh was it some good candy, just a bit on the expensive side thats why we only seemed to get it at Christmas.

Did you check the link? My Mother in Law always talked about the caramels as she grew up in DC. I found that the family is now making the candie in Va. I had a few boxes sent to her in Colorado. She said they taste just like they did when she had them last.

Peace
I remember when Smallwood Villiage Center opened. Let's see, there was Arnold's Ice Cream, Unique Chic, a record store and the name is on the tip of my tongue but I can't remember it, dry cleaners, maybe MacIlhaneys ( I know I butchered that but too bad), a hardware store, Nautilus (I went to the opening when Lou Ferrigno signed autographs and I shook his hand), a pet store, Jerry's (my first place of employment to pay off court costs ), the movie theaters, Tylers (the western wear store), a sporting good/shoe store, Safeway, Peoples Drug, a magazine store on the corner where I used to buy wrestling magazines :lmao: and a few other places I can't think of.

I'm known for my memory of trivial things. But I lived in Waldorf from 1973 until 1993. My father lived there from 1945 until 1966 and again from 1973 until now. My grandfather lived there from 1903 -1978 and my great-grandfather.... well you get the idea. When things started changing, it was a big deal. So much of it held a small-town atmosphere where everyone knew everyone.... Shoot, I couldn't go into a business as a teenager without having someone saying, "so, how's yo' momma and daddy a-doin'"

I remember the day they opened St. Charles Parkway. We'd watched it being built because we used to pass through the intersection where it hits Rt 5. I remember my mother was happy because it was going to save us going all the way around to Smallwood Dr. at 925, when we went to visit grandma.

Another thing I think is funny, the Safeway, as I said used to be over in the Circuit City building. They moved it to Smallwood, where it is now over by the library. They closed the old one because the town couldn't support both, especially since the Giant had just been built on 301. That assessment proved true when another grocery store tried to take over that building and failed (I can't remember what it was, but it didn't last long).... And where did they just build a new Safeway a little over a year ago?? Right across the street from Circuit City.

Oh, I drove passed the old Stardust site today and made a point of looking. That satelitte photo someone posted is pretty accurate but for the buildings being torn down of course. There's been no construction on either side of that property for 20-30 years at least. The Stardust only occupied 2.76 acres, according to the state tax records, but it is surrounded by 34.8 acres of never developed land that borders the townhouses in Acton Village in the back.

Now, it's been many, many years since I was in Acton Village, so excuse me if I'm wrong, but isn't that area, especially the townhouses, pretty run down and crime-ridden? Not exactly the place I'd want to put upscale businesses.

Yall know the Roberts clan from Waldorf????

I wouldnt get to excited about this place just yet, The peterson company is busy with the national harbor right now and they dont even return my phone calls for leasing space in the town center. All those restaurants they talked about are just talk until they sign on the line. All i do is commercial real estate so I know the facts.

Festival will get started soon on their lifestyle center and you see the marketplace is complete now as well. Look for Brandywine crossing to start soon as well.

Looks like they started clearing more trees this week at Brandywine Crossing, since you have a little insight into the commerical real estate market what else besides the stores listed on the sign might we see at Brandywine?
What do you know if any about the planned stores at Charlotte Hall Crossing, thats what Ive been told its going to be called, right there on the corner of Golden Beach Rd. and Three Notch and Charlote Hall Rd. (across from McDon. and Burger King). Heard its going to be Safeway now, (was going to be a Giant) with gas pumps and a couple of other stores and some out parcels.

besides the safeway target and costco they are going for a stadium seat theatre. safeway and costco will both have gas as well. They have not sent me an update of small tenants or restaurants yet.

The one in charlotte hall is with another developer, ill have to look into it, they dont have any info on their website.

Jack Russells RULE!
Yes... and they were chained to the rack. They also sold "Oh La La Sasson"
I remember we stopped going to Iverson Mall when within one weeks time, someone shot a people who were in the walkway that went over the road and connected the two buildings and a 13 year old kid came out of Crystal Skate and was shooting up the parking lot in the middle of the day.

Remember EJ Roberts, next to Crystal Skate?

Things haven't changed in PeeGee County.

I avoid Waldorf at all costs. I take back roads home so I don't have to see or deal with all the idiots around there. In the morning I drive through Waldorf around 3, No one is out, No Problem. I swear I should move to Canada or Alaska.

How about cruising the parking lot!! Not just once but 10 to 15 times. Then heading to the McDonald's.

Does anyone remember the Sear's Surplus store? and the People's Drug store?

I was dragged to that Surplus store quite often for school clothes.

When I worked for CVS in that shopping center (it had just changed from Peoples when I transfered from another store) many of the ladies who worked during the daytime had been there since they had a lunch counter.

I used to go to that sear surplus store when i was a kid, that place was a mess, lol i loved to eat at the old soda fountain shop in the drug store.
I miss the old 301 drive in.

I will tell you why we dont get certain kinds of business down here. Alot of people want the higher restaurants and things but what it comes down to is population. They require a certain population during business hours that apparently we do not have in charles county. This is due to the number of people that travel out of county to work. So the first question they ask me when they tour the area is what is your daytime population? Even tho we fill up these places on weekends, its not enought for them in the way they crunch numbers. If more people were in the area at all times of the day we could get the bigger chains.
Aother thing is how they look at demographics. They will pull up the numbers for the area but dont realize how people travel in the county. So they only see whats in waldorf but not indian head, laplata, and other areas. So they see a low number and immediately bail. Thats why i have to hand hold them and show where everyone is. show them how many people are in the area as a whole. Tenthey start to understand.

I hope this helps you all understand the game a bit better

Disney I've been in the Waldorf area 35 years, at one time many years ago there was a article in the the paper I believe the Md. Indpendent that was about restaurants. It was in reference to how if a new chain was going to put places in Maryland they would chose Waldorf don't know why guess they had some study that people ate out alot.
Thats why Waldorf had the first Wendy's in the state and the first Perkins and there were a few others that this old guy cant remember, like what use to be in the place across from Raley's Furniture that was the old Jean's Las Vega's, wasn't the Friendlys it was before that and also the old Po Folks.
I think the new Boston Gourmet is the first Maryland location.:howdy:
