And did you also know, The old Highs store, which is now a mexican food store,
at 5 & 925 used to be Waldorf's movie theater?
Yep, I think it closed back in the 50's, Dad said he used to go there when he was a kid. And across the street, where the TNT clothing store is was a three story hotel. The top two floors burned and they didn't have the money or inclination to rebuild. I think that was back in the 40's though. The Maryland Bank and Trust there by the railroad tracks was a department store until the early 60's The place across from the fire station was Scott's hardware store until the late 70's/early 80's.

I forgot Gino's on my list of restaurants. The Bob's Big Boy was where Burger Chef was before that. When I was in elementary school, we took a field trip there. Got to put our own hamburgers on the grill. It was a wire conveyor belt that went over a flame... stuck it in one side and it came out the other. Also as part of the same field trip we went into the A&P, got to walk all through the meat department and store rooms. Can you imagine how many sanitary and safety regulations we'd be breaking today if kids could do that?

How about cruising the parking lot!! Not just once but 10 to 15 times. Then heading to the McDonald's.

Does anyone remember the Sear's Surplus store? and the People's Drug store?
Mom's favorite store was the Sear's Surplus.

Did you know that before there was Shopper's World, they cruised back and forth behind it, on 925. (Mom and Dad told me about that) My brother cruised the parking lot in his sporty car. Shortly after he outgrew it (sporty car broke down and he had to go with the practical hatchback) there was an article about cruising on the front page of the Maryland Independant. Bro's hatchback was front and center in the picture, he happened to be there on legitimate business and was totally embarassed that any of his friends might think he was crusing in the hatchback.

I think there was a Burger Chef on Rt 450 in New Carrollton.

Remember Zayre?
There was a Zayre's in Camp Springs when I was a kid. There was one in Waldorf for only a few months before the whole company was bought out by Ames. There was already an Ames in Waldorf, so they sold the building lease to Burlington Coat Factory. That was in the 80's.

We used to go to Rustler's every Friday night when I was a kid. Then off to the drive-in in Oxon Hill. :lmao:

I remember eating lunch in Woolworth's when I was a kid. First time I ever had a cherry Coke. :yum: There used to be shoe stores too, where you couldn't just grab a box off the rack, but sat down and got sized and waited on.

Kinney's and Thom McCann's come to mind. But as a child, because of my super narrow feet, my mom had to get my shoes from Clinton Bootery.
