I would think it matters if he had to fight in a war and watch his commrades be blown to bits by "peaceful" folks who started this nonsense on the basis of religious beliefs his daughter is now being forced to "tolerate". Why SHOULDN"T it matter?

Then it would be a great teaching opportunity for him and his kids to discuss religious extremism and his personal experience with it.

There appears to have been multiple opportunities for the concerned parent to better this situation but instead he is choosing to react emotionally. The only lesson I see here is a parent teaching his kids to hate the same people he hates for his reasons instead of teaching them to explore and apply some critical thinking.

Celebrating Christmas, a religious holiday, is a bit different than learning Christianity's place in history from a textbook. If Christmas is to be celebrated, then in all fairness the kids can take a Hajj field trip to Mecca. Remember, public schools are secular.

Something else I'm questioning about the original article and subsequent ones as well, why is this man being a former Marine relevant? Would the actions and outcome be any different if he never served in the military? Somdnews.com is the only one I've seen that did not make the distinction.

My quarrel with a holiday tree is they will have taken something that was originally known as a Christmas tree and stripped it of its meaning. Either call it like it is or eliminate it, but don't change it to fit some PC agenda. Not until all other religions have their customs and symbols changed to holiday as well.

I guess whether or not he's a Marine is relevant because it's an opportunity to paint another servicemember as radical crazy person.

I guess as a parent he has every right to keep his daughter from learning an important part of world history and teach her to be as intolerant as he wants. However, the pics of her homework don't imply that tolerance was forced on her by the history lesson.

Then it would be a great teaching opportunity for him and his kids to discuss religious extremism and his personal experience with it.

Exactly. His daughter had a reason for trying to hide it from him. My guess is she was familiar with what his reaction would be, justified or not. She was just a kid trying to get her homework done.

Ok, I understand what you mean about the tree now. Sorry, I misunderstood you. :huggy:

I was kind of thinking the mention of his being a Marine was to incite a patriotic-type emotional reaction to those reading the article, but I guess it could be that too. After all, he does kind of come across as someone who, at the very least, overreacted.

Of interest is question #14. How could they expect the kids to answer that question if the lesson had not touched on Christianity as well?

The "daughter" isn't the one upset ,she was fine with the assignment ,it's her ignorant father that is upset .

They are religious fundamentalists. "Extremists" is a western made-up term; one created to try and marginalize or downgrade the true nature of the beast.

Bottom line is we need to KEEP FEAR ALIVE for the GOP to SURVIVE! If young people stop fearing Islam, Democrats, Ebola, black people, God, Mexicans, aetheists, jews, the ACLU, Darwin, Obamacare, ISIS, arabs, Government, gun laws, hybrid cars, nutritionists, homosexuals, rap music, rock music, etc., the GOP will cease to exist!!
Halloweeen is approaching, folks, and voters are NOT yet scared enough!! Democrats are going to take your guns, religion, and money if people don't vote for republicans!

This is still Maryland, right? That should answer you question. Maryland does some really stupid things and dissing Christianity in the public school system is undoubtedly one of them.

Emotions aren't the problem. Poorly modulated emotional response and a lack of rationality is why this parent's argument is ridiculous.

Anyone please name a remotely decent reason why children shouldn't be introduced to learning the basic tenants of the #2 world religion that is dominating our headlines.

You've made a very interesting point.

I personally don't think this is a great reason but I wonder if an argument could be made that Christianity is so prevalent in this area that it's assumed children already have exposure to the basic idea of it? From looking at pictures of the homework assignment, it's clear that they aren't attempting to teach any of the types Islam but simply touching on the very general basics of it.

Main Streeter
According to the snopes article, it was NOT a peace order. It was a simple no trespassing. You can get a no trespassing order for any reason. According to the original order, the parent's "threat" was to involve media. Which the school itself ended up doing. Ridiculous. The school needs to get a grip.

Whatever it was called, he was banned from school grounds because he threatened to "cause a disruption". There was no mention of media.

The school system said, "There is also misinformation about why the school issued a No Trespass Order on a parent. This parent threatened to cause problems that would potentially disrupt La Plata High School this morning. To ensure the safety of students and staff at the school, the school administration placed a No Trespass Order on this parent."

I don't get parents in this area at all.

Common core is too hard.
Humanities are a waste of time.
Sports create an unfairness within the curriculum.
Backpacks are too heavy.
There's too much homework.
Back then we didn't have iPads and you don't need them either.
You shouldn't go year round because it messes up the traditional vacation schedule.
Don't teach them about world religions but give them a Christmas holiday.
College is the devil and it's filled with liberals and the liberal agenda.
You should suck it up and work a lower paying job and just be happy you have one.
Teachers get paid too much.

What do you want them to learn? Why don't you want them to learn MORE than you did? And then some of you can't figure out why our youth has problems successfully going to college and the workforce...Even at the better schools in this area, your kids don't compete well educationally with children of other countries even though there's no good excuse for it.

And you know what you do have in this area? A great homeschooling network. So if you don't like that your kids are being taught actual history, maybe you should try teaching them yourself and see how easy that is.

The disruption was to contact the media and have other parents that objected to the assignment come to the school to voice their concerns.

I've never seen the first shred of evidence that supports the notion that the majority of them even learn as much we "we" did, much less "more".

Fair enough. Do you want them to learn exactly the same thing as you did? The world is a much different place than it was when we were young and we should adjust our education goals to accommodate those changes.
