Why do kids have knives? Be it a butcher knife or pocket knife. It is not an object for a child to have. I do not get parents who give their kids these as if they are toys. It is not like they are camping and need them for survival. I feel the same way about parents who buy their kids guns. There are so many other things in the world for them to play with. Less violent things. But, this is just my opinion.

My husband went to school up in Frederick County and he said he had a knife with him all the time in school. Of course he's a big red neck, and so were the rest of the classmates.

I myself brought a knife to school when I was a senior up near Baltimore. The teacher took it away and stuck in her desk. I didn't get it back.

But I know that the world has changed, and being a teacher is as dangerous as being a police officer. I respect that. If everything goes ok for us, my son will have learned a BIG lesson about life, and we will be a closer family.

Less violent things like what?? Grand Theft Auto?? Doom??

I'd rather give my child a knife or a gun for a present and teach them how to use it, than have him take death and killing lightly in a video game.

It's a proven fact that kids that have never been around guns are much more dangerous if they "happen on to one" than a kid that has been around them and has been taught about them. Shielding your kids from things you don't know about could be more harmful.

Besides that, getting a knife or a gun is a big deal, and to some a rite of passage. An adult telling their child they are big enough, mature enough to be entrusted with a knife or a gun.

I'm against violent video games. I do not consider it shielding them. It is showing them the important things in life.

Obviously he was not if he took it to school.

When your kid is expelled 06-07-2007 03:55 PM do you EVER shut up?
Yes. But I see nothing wrong with posting my opinion. Nobody has to agree with it.

i don't think it is that OBVIOUS, it's a friggin pocket knife, not a .38 or a Glock..

It's a tool.. unless you're a scared liberal, than it's a WEAPON!!

The knives they use in the lunchroom are more dangerous, as are the forks, and the pointy ends of the spoons.. this is just mass hysteria at it's worst. By the time the kid could get a pocket knife out of his pocket, opened it, and got the pointy end pointed in the right direction, he'd already have his ass whooped anyways..

OMG they shot up Columbine high School, with Shotguns and rifles.. BAN POCKET KNIVES!! Makes a lot of sense doesn't it?

We have different opinions on this. So be it. I just know that my kids will not have weapons for toys. :yay:

That's where your thinking is really screwed up.. nobody on here suggested ANY weapon was a toy, that was your thought process that made that connection.

Because in my eyes, it is a weapon and a child should not possess one.

Riding bikes? Reading? Hanging out with friends? Playing games? Playing sports? Collecting baseball cards?
And if his bike breaks are you going to let him try to fix it, or are you afraid that he may use the weapons afforded him in the tool box for evil??

You better not let him hang out with other kids, they may actually have manly father figures that teach them about hunting, and knives and guns and such.. They may even DISCUSS these things with your child.

So, a man is not manly unless he likes hunting, knives, and guns? WTFever. BTW, last time I checked, fixing a bike does not require a knife or a gun.

A flat tip screwdriver is much more dangerous and deadly than most pocket knives. And probably used in more crimes than a pocket knife too.

Hammers, yup, can kill someone with one of those.. crescent wrench.. you betcha.. cross tip screw drivers.. yep, can kill someone AND leave cool patterns..
