I just like to poke a pin in people who sneer at local dining establishments and swear that the only good food is in either DC or Annapolis. You know - where the REAL people and businesses are, as opposed to fly-over country.

:yeahthat: I have had as many bad meals in Annapolis and DC as I've had down in Calvert, and Mama Lucias had about the blandest food I ever had in an Italian Restaurant. An awful lot of transplants look for every little thing to re-enforce their unhappiness after they have moved down here away from the promised lands of DC and Annapolis.

Perhaps the newbies should ask us locals where to find fine dining. I know of a lot of places that have very good food. Thing is, most of them do hardly any advertising so that means it is usually done via word of mouth.

I like living here in calvert but dining out in the county Stinks. Everyplace I have eaten so far blows. I really can;t say there is one good place that I have eaten at here in calvert. Oh wait Mama lucia in Dunkirk. They are ok. In St Marys the only place I enjoy is Outback. I hate applebee's and Ruby tuesday. And all of the other hole in the walls are just dirty. My hubby and I finds ourselve in Annapolis to go out to dine. Solomons dining calls themselve "fine dining". Yea right!!! You pay too much for bland food.
We need better places to dine at. I am tired of traveling to Annapolis to dine. Even though they have the best places. My favs. Are Yellow Fins, and the Rams Head Tavern.
You sound very unhappy.

Are there any good restaurants in this town? No wonder most are infested by Fear Factor challenges. Anyone have a clue what's going in front of the new Best Buy and Ross? I'm hoping it's a Romano's Macaroni Grill. That would be nice!
It's where the new Tiki is going to be next year, they sold the Solomons Tiki to the Marriot who is going to turn the island into a resort, with a 25 story hotel as the centerpice where the Tiki is now.. huge tropical garden/ aviary in the back, they are in the process now of buying all the property on that end of the island, their biggest problem being U of MD biological lab. After they complete that they plan on bribing a couple dozen state senators to tear down the Solomons Bridge to put in a big suspension bridge like the Golden Gate (rumor is it's going to be a DOUBLE decker) to bring even MORE tourists in to stay at their hotel/resort.. THEN they plan on conveniently finding indian remains and artifacts on the island, having a Marriot tribe lay claim to the land, and turn their resort/hotel into an Indian Casino.. $$$$..

 You got to be kidding....you can't seriously believe that. It would take more than a couple dozen state senators to approve a project that massive. Plus they wouldn't be that stupid. Almost everyone would figure out something is shady. Then anyone who approved it would be under investigation.

I could be wrong but finding Indian remains is not enough to open an Inidan casino. On the other hand if a find like that was made and archaeologists decide it is an important site they may want to postpone building a hotel there for further study. I think to open an Inidan casino it have to be on an existing Indian reservation.

With Outback, I said it is the only place that I feel is any good. I never said anything about that pace being fine dining. I lived here for over 15 years and cannot stand the places around here. And then I said - I think the food at Mama Lucia ( sp?) was ok!!!! Never said it was the best. I had better and I had worst. I feel that Calvert should have better fine dining. The fine dining that we do have SUCKS! Yes, I do have to go to Annapolis. I love Annapolis. The best place besides the Rams Head Tavern is the Ruth Chris steakhouse. When I go out and spend $100 or more on dinner, I expect it to be a good meal. I want good service along with good food and good wine. That is how I feel. I had a problem with every place in Solomon's and many in ST. Mary's county.
So excuse me for stating my Opinion. I cannot help it that Southern part of Calvert has no good restaurant. Oh, let me add one more thing the service at some of these places stinks too.

Counties such as St. Mary's and Calvert aren't going to have the fine dinning you're looking for. You see there's just no money in it. Sure we have the base but what else does Calvert and St. Mary's offer in the paycheck? Someone could possibly open up a fine dinning restaurant but where would it get it's clientele? Would you go there twice a week or more to keep it in business? You're only going to find the bulk of fine dinning restaurants where the pay scale increases i.e. Annapolis, New York, D.C., ect.

To the person who made a commented about my grammar. Excuse me I forgot to proof read my writing. I usually type and correct my mistakes after I am finished. I just was so impatient that I forgot to correct my mistake.

That could be true! Nevertheless, with the recent growth here in Calvert I feel that a nice fine dining restaurant would succeed. I mean a place where you leave you kids at home with a babysitter. (Yes, I have kids). Not only do we lack in that area, we also lack in the area of keeping these kids (Teens) occupied over the weekend. We need a better theater. Both closes by theater needs a serious remolding. I think it would be cool to provide a place where kids can hang out play pool and video game. In addition, it could be where they can show off their talent. How many teens do you know have garage bands, rap, or girl group singing here in this area? Do any of them outside of school have a place where they can show off their talent to a group of their own peers? Ok Well I got off topic. I just think another pizza place or another Chinese place is not needed. I do not think two food lion is needed.
Oh by the way to the other person that mention about MAMA Lucia have bland food. I agree with you on part of it. As I said, I had better. The best place I would like to see is Carrabba's here in Calvert.

I don't know about Calvert but LHS holds more than a few battle of the bands at the tech center I believe. The Hollywood Teen Center is always holding teen bands and the like.:yay:

What's funny is that there have been several fine dining establishments in SoMD. There was one over in Drum Point that was the fanciest and most pretentious restaurant I've ever been to - pristine waiters, tiny portions of artistically arranged food with drizzles of decorative sauce on them. You were treated like the President when you went there and the food was excellent quality.

It failed after just a couple of months because not enough people are interested in that sort of thing. Plus the owner thought advertising was beneath her, so nobody knew she was there. She threw a party before she opened and had all of St. Mary's and Calvert's "elite" there, wining and dining, thinking that a handful of elected officials and us poverty-striken media types would keep her in business. We said, "Good food," then continued patronizing Lenny's and Willows.
