Hate to say it after reading your posts, but if I want a good steak, I'll go to Ruth's Chris, the District Chop House, and Smith & Wollensky long before I'd go to Outback Steakhouse. Of course, living up here, I don't even know where the closest Outback is!!! Does this make me :hoity-toity:? I don't think so...it's not like I go to Ruth's Chris every day. It just means that when I want to go out for a good steak, I'm willing to spend the money to eat something worthwhile.

I remember when Outback opened in SoMD...it was such a "big deal." Sort of like Target. My feeling is, there was NEVER any "fine dining" in SoMD. If you want a good meal with good service, come to DC.

I really consider a place that is truly a fine dining is a place that where kids are not welcome. I have kids myself and I know how it is to go to a place with kids. The crying and screaming. The kicking the booth. I Have to say yes the Rams Head tavern does have drinks and small concerts there but have you ate there. In the dining area. It is actually nice. I was expecting a causal affair because of the brewery but that was not the case. But I have to say the best place I have eaten is no where near here. It is call the Grand Lux Cafe in Las Vegas. It was at the Venetian casino/ hotel. My hubby and I went there for lunch and I have too say even thought dinner was $$$ it was worth it. I just had so many bad experience here in SoMd. I do give them more than one try too. I used too work in the restaurant business for over 10 years And maybe it is just that I am too hard on places. I expect more from others. It is hard when you have been in the business and have family who also been in the business. I guess I critic every little thing. From the cleanliness to the service to the food. The worst is if you get a bad waitress/ waiter. They can make your experience bad. Once a server pisses me off I become very judgmental. The one place I have not tried is that new Italian place next to Outback. ( ?) Wonder if they are any good.

Quit your whining and move to Las Vegas.. those of us that like/love it here, are truly tired of people that complain about every little thing that they don't like about the area.. I'm sure nobody asked you to move here, but am sure there would be many to ask you to leave!!

Sorry Bob with the people I have been dealing with lately I tend to assume the worse in a lot of people and I was wondering if you happened to be one of those.

When I stop someone for a DUI, I don't expect them to tell me that they drink and drive everyday and that the've poped .08 BAC and was released before.

Bob, I never believed what you stated, I was wondering if you believed it or just joking. I've never chatted with you so I wasn't sure if you were naive/stupid or just joking around......some people around here do believe everything they hear and spread it around as though it is fact. I'll make a mental note that you're not one of those.

I think it was you several months ago that told me that anyone that has Hobbes for an avatar can't be too bad. It was my avatar until I got my personalized avatar.

What's the point of comparing Vegas to here anyways? This area's economy is dominated by the base while Vegas' economy is based on tourism so it have to have some restaurants with good service and food.

cdsulhoff ...if you don't mind here are some friendly advice. When you're new to somewhere don't start by complaining how crappy the place is. Do you usually complain about someone's house when you just met them for the first time.

I think when someone becomes a regular the others will put up with their negative commment as long as it's not a constant thing. I mean a lot of us complain how crappy the service in the restaurants in the area can be but most of us have favorites also.

IMHO.....

Not only that, but it's like having a friend with an ugly kid - THEY can say their kid is ugly, but YOU better shut up about it.

Aarrgghh! For those who care, I moved here from LA because I love the beauty of the area and love the good-hearted nature of the people. (Someone tell me you care!?!)

Back in the day, the only place to eat was at Evan's Seafood for their all-you-can-eat special. Crab-stuffed shrimp was my favorite, with piss clams smothered in butter running a close second. Platters of steamed shrimp in Old Bay. And then there were crabs, crabs, crabs. Knock 'em and wash them down with cole slaw. Everything included. $13.50.

Good times, good times... And that wasn't barely 15 years ago.

Now when I want crabs I go to Stoneys on Solomons and have a crab cake. (I don't have the patience anymore...) I go to DiGiovannis for Italian food, Catamaran's for wings, Lone Star for steak during lunch, but Outback for steak at dinner. Monterrey's can be great or horrible, so I usually don't throw the dice there anymore. Linda's Cafe serves a mean meatloaf with green beans on Wednesdays. Probably the best $4.95 you will ever throw down.

About 6 times a year I will roll into Asahi and ask for the "sashimi whatever". (I don't think it is listed as such on the menu.) Nothing to ##### about, and the more grouper the better. Never encountered a maggot. Usually runs me $40.

I avoid everywhere else like the plague, especially BWB, the noodle place, and any chain with a "fun" theme like 'Applebees'.

Big question here... How did Ruth's Chris get tied up in this thread? Did one just move into SoMD, maybe taking over the Dean Lumber building or Agape Auto Repair? (Hold me back!) Ruth's Chris is the BEST steakhouse. For under $100 a couple can enjoy a perfectly prepared steak with two or three side dishes and leave a nice tip.

My last comment... If you think you want to go to the Tides, don't!!! Some of their food is wonderful, most is horrible. Before you go, take $160 out of your pocket and look at it...play with it...beautiful green crinkly... My girlfriend and myself dined at the Tides, and as we left the parking lot she asked, "Do you think Taco Bell is still open?"

I'm not convinced that you do understand the situation.
It doesn't matter if you were a native of the area. You're new to the chat and people had negative first impressions of you. Even if you are not new to the area you will meet people from the area you have not met before. As far as they are concerned you are new. Like I stated earlier if you meet someone for the first time are you going to make a comment that they may find offensive? Not if you want to continue a relationship with them. Later on when you are friends you can afford to be more honest on some points.

Yes, Las Vegas has a service based economy, which means it depends on good service. Gambling isn't the only reason people go to Vegas. If the service is bad they may go elsewhere. The city caters to tourists. I grew up partially in Orlando another service economy city. Do you think people would go to Walt Disney World if Mickey and Minnie told kids to F**k off regularly if they misbehaved? Here in St Mary's and southern Calvert it's military based economy. People who goes to these restaurants live here and are pretty much stuck with the bad service or good.

I could be wrong but I think it makes sense.

That made me laugh

Triggerfish is right - St. Mary's is a rural area, not a metropolitan one. That's the problem the come-heres have: they enjoy the peaceful setting, with the boating and crabbing, but they want to bring their big city restaurants and entertainment venues with them. This is not Manhattan - this is southern Maryland. Run up to DC or Baltimore for your entertainment and quit complaining.

So you've been here 15 years, so unless you're too young to drive you are NOT native.. so you came from somewhere else.. I stand by my comment, if you don't like it here, go back from whence you came!!
I personally love it here...
