Illegal immigration is not a major problem around here.

Whoa there big fella... at the risk of sounding as bigoted and racist as some on this board, I remember well what Charlotte Hall looked like during picking season. You couldn't go to Food Lion without seeing several vans full of Mexicans buying their week's supply of groceries a dozen or so at a time. They had no cars, and apparently lived communally. I'm not saying they were illegals, but usually if it walks like a duck...

Alas...

But you would know because they should all have SSNs for tax filing. Unless you pay under the table...then how would you know if they are illegal or not.

...I am now a suspect. We follow all the rules.

I can't vouch for a SS number or drivers liscense, can I? Or am I now an investigator for the state, responsible for the validity of documentation?

We're in Frederick County...

...we have a big, giant fence and motion detectors and armed guards at the Montgomery County border.

Of course, about those guards...we did get them kinda cheap...and the guys who put up the fence looked kinda, well, you know...

 Hey, as long as they show you something, you're covered. If they give you a fake SSN, then someone else is getting the credit for their labor, maybe some dead guy.

I was wondering about that myself. If I make up some BS SSN, and have a phony SS card printed up, and give that number to an employer, how does that employer know it's bogus - especially if I'm hired as a picker for a couple of months? I think SS payments are reported quarterly, so it would be two or three months before my SSN would even be reported to the IRS, and how long would it be, if ever, before the IRS figured out the number was bogus and inform the employer?

Everytime I watch one of those landscape improvement shows on TV, the host is some white guy and the workers all appear to be Mexican. Is that coincidence or are all Mexicans superior horticulturists?

...the only thing the feds get from us with SS numbers and employee names is the ANNUAL FUTA, federal unemployment, report.

MD requires us to report new hires. Not sure what they do with it.

Annual? How do you pay SS/Medicare fees?

...over paid and underworked payroll specialist wires them their filthy lucre within three days of each payday but it is a raw number; not a detailed thing. I think the IRS picks it up on the W2, annually, for specific individual.

So it's all just lumped together, not broken out by SSN. Interesting, I didn't know that.

I'm not getting you. What's to repeat? The question is if a large percentage says you shouldn't have a gun, does that mean you are wrong for having a gun and should get rid of it?
No, dear. It's the difference between a legally owned gun and an illegal immigrant.

I am writing perfectly legible English. I am not crazy.

...it gets generated internally, our reports, each pay period and shows on your stub; fed w/h, state, employer ss/me, emplotee ss/med but then it is a gross transaction when it gets paid.

So, the W2, the feds get Steves ss/med, your share and the employer contribution'. They get a w3 from me to reconcile against.

But, paycheck by paycheck, they have no idea what came from you, if anything. And THAT, witholding is THE single most vulgar affront to a free society in the history of mankind.

YOU should get a bill, every month, from the government and pay your own damn taxes.

We'd have us a tuned in electorate then.

We'd have the exact same situation but with a different name.

Great.

Steve said:
I agree 100%.

...if there was ONE thing I could change about our society it would be that; an individual has to pay his taxes and benefits.

No more witholding.

No more employer paid benefits.

Everything else would fall in place after that because people would pay the hell attention then and class politics would dissapear overnight because no one would tolerate the inequality once it was so blatantly obvious. As it is, it never came out of my pocket; who cares?

I'd support that platform.

Which explains why you don't know how it works. :jet:

Indeed, we collect SSNs when a new person is hired, then they are reported to the Maryland New Hire Registry. The purpose of this is to nab people with outstanding child support warrants, and probably also to nab illegal employees. But the official reason is to track deadbeat parents.

Each quarter, I do a MD unemployment report, which breaks down each employee and their wages by SSN. FUTA doesn't ask for individual employee information, but SUI does.

Then, of course, W-2s must be filed at the end of the year with all federal and state reconciliation reports.

For Steve:

Medicare and SS payments are included with federal tax deposits, which get deposited either monthly or semiweekly, depending on your payroll level. Each quarter you file a 941 report, stating the taxes deposited for that quarter and including SS and MED payments.

So if you're going to be busted for illegal immigration, it's more likely the State will get you before the Feds.

Oh, then you're not crazy... just missing the point. The question was if you should consider yourself wrong solely because a large percentage of people disagree with you.

So what I'm hearing is that someone could provide a completely bogus SSN and the employer wouldn't be aware of it until the end of the year? And probably not even then unless the IRS caught it?
