Stray Friendly Young Boxer - HELP PLEASE

Boxy has a rope toy. He's quite gentle when he takes things from your hand like treats, his toy, etc. He was playing with his rope toy and wanting me to play too, so while he had it in his mouth and I held the other end I said "leave" and he promptly let go. Wow I thought - so I did it again, this time I didn't hold the other end and I said "leave" and he dropped it and sat waiting for the next command.

This dog has had a good bit of training! He's going to make someone a great buddy with the training he's already had. Boxers are obviously very smart dogs.

Catt and I agreed that I should make another effort to try to find Boxy's family. He is such a great dog that someone just HAS to be looking for him! So I posted ads on Craig's List and I listed him on several online lost/found sites. Unless his owner is dead, comatose, or in jail etc., why else wouldn't they be looking for this wonderful dog? I even thought just maybe he belongs to a deployed military person and they don't know he is missing? Maybe whoever was dog-sitting didn't tell them he ran off? There are so many possibilities.

Craig's List has a no cross-posting policy, so to get around that, I made each ad different in wording, but they all have the same picture. Hopefully the person reviewing the new ads will be lenient and allow them to stay in place because THEY know who the author of the ads is, and could pull all but 1 if they wanted to. The ads are still in place so they must have a heart.

I had a concerned forumite PM me after seeing one of the ads.

I posted on: So.MD, NVA, MD, and DC Craig's List. So if you see one of the ads .... I did that. This is the picture I used with the ads.

First, I would like to say I applaud you for taking care of this guy even though you know you cannot keep him. It is definitely not okay to say "I cannot help" and walk away.

Have you tried contacting the Calvert County Humane Society or CAWL? I know it's a distance for you, but they are no-kill and have many educated volunteers.

I have a contact at CAWL who may be willing to meet you somewhere to pick him up. Let me know!

I appreciate the offer, but I'm really hoping I can find his prior owner. Catt and I are really trying hard to do the best we can for this sweet boy. I'm planning to hold on to him until he goes to his prior owner, or we find a suitable placement for him. It's been a juggling act to swap dogs from room to room, but it's worth it to be sure this boy ends up with a good life somewhere. Thanks for being so kind as to offer to help though.

Ark, I am too lazy to go through all of the Posts on Boxy. I don't have time anyway, because I'm leaving for work shortly. Did you say that Boxy is Chipped? The reason I ask is because a few years ago, a Black Cat found us. I took him to see if he was Chipped, and he was. When I called the Chip Company, they said they had no record of the Chipping, and that it must not have been registered. I talked to 3 different people, when one finally told me where he was Chipped. I called the Vet, and gave them the Chip Number, and they called the Owner, who sadly, no longer wanted him. So I kept him. Maybe you can do some investigating in the area in which Boxy was found. Leave Pictures with contact information.

No chip, and yes we still are in contact with the place he showed up at (business) and they are always asking people if they know anyone missing a boxer. They said no one has come by asking about a lost dog.

Checking in on Boxy?! How's he doing?

He's eating well and gaining weight. Someone on one of the lost/found FB pages suggested we keep him in "foster" status for 6 months in case the owner has been away and doesn't know their dog is missing (could be deployed military), then after that go ahead and find him a permanent home. I've had him 2 months already.

It's getting hard to keep going with both dogs here since we have to keep them apart. I'd like to find someone to foster him that may also want to adopt him if his owner doesn't turn up. The fostering period would give the person time to see if they want to adopt Boxy.

His energy level probably would be best for an active single person or active couple without small children. We still don't know if he would get along with other dogs yet. He doesn't have separation anxiety or tear up anything when left alone. He has never had an accident inside the house. He's had some training as I mentioned before, and now that I know him better, I control his leash pulling with verbal commands that he obeys. He pulls to sniff ....... I think he is following the scent trails of critters that strolled by during the night. He's a lovable character for sure.

I'm hoping to find someone interested in fostering Boxy. Wanna volunteer <G>? :howdy:

Have you tried to introduce him to your dog? Or are you just guessing that they won't get along?

My dog has fought the 2 males he met that were dominant dogs, so I don't want to introduce MY dog to any more males. I am hesitant to introduce Boxy to someone else's dog, as I don't want to be responsible for a fight if they don't get along.

I have seen dogs act fine together initially, then break into a fight, so holding dogs on leashes to see if they act aggressive toward one another, isn't the true test of compatibility in my experiences. Someone with more dog introduction experience should probably be the one to introduce Boxy to another dog.

Boxy sure is a smart boy - he has me top dressing his dry food or he just sits looking at it ....... I initially added moist dog food, but broke him out of that habit. Then somehow .... I found myself drizzling bacon grease on his dry food to get him to eat it sooner.

Yeah I had been mixing water in it to dilute it, but yesterday I told him GO EAT, and left him with the food for about an hour and ignored his pleas for add-ons .... eventually he ate it - :yahoo:

even mixing it with water could cause pancreatitis

he will eat when he gets hungry! :killingme

I recall old grease being something that goes into some of the cheap dog foods. So I know it's not a healthy thing to add.

I'll end up buying some canned food to mix in to make him happy.

...

but i do see many dogs come in as their owners give them fatty, greasy left overs.

It was a Kodak moment but I missed it ......

Went in the bedroom to check on Boxy, and he's on the bed, cuddled up with 2 teddy bears, with has his head on MY pillow. Apparently he knows how to be cozy?

I'll bet that was cute as hell! I would have loved to see that myself.
