I specifically said the Catholic Church.

Please read my comments.
I did and I know you said "Catholic Church" in your first post and then you waggled your finger at me and said "Church". So which is it and why did you waggle?

She's speaking of the "church officials", not the robots that attend.

Absolutely.
I questioned the Bible and God and rejected both for a while and then I woke up to the Truth.
I think that most that want to dismiss God and the Bible just want to live and do without regard to eternal consequences or don't want to believe that there is a being more powerful than themselves.

I think there is alot of room in the world for different beliefs and no one way is the right way. What each person believes doesn't make it wrong or right. I hope the movie opens up discussion and dialogue so people do ask questions and opens their minds to different ways.

There is One major difference between Christianity and other religions. Other religions are man's attempt to be good enough to get to heaven, nirvana, etc. Christianity is God's plan of salvation because He knows we cannot be good enough so we need forgiveness. Religion is man reaching up to God. Christianity is God reaching down to man.

Christianity began within the Jewish religion among the followers of Jesus of Nazareth. Under the leadership of the Apostles Peter and Paul, it welcomed Gentiles, and gradually separated from Pharisaic Judaism. Some Jewish Christians rejected this approach and developed into various sects of their own, while others were joined with Gentile Christians in the development of the church; within both groups there existed great diversity of belief. Professor Bentley Layton writes, "the lack of uniformity in ancient Christian scripture in the early period is very striking, and it points to the substantial diversity within the Christian religion." A church hierarchy seems to have developed by the time of the Pastoral Epistles (1 Tim 3, Titus 1) and was certainly formalized by the 4th century [9].

Christianity spread across the Mediterranean Basin, enduring persecution by the Roman Emperors. As Christianity expanded beyond Palestine, it also came into increased contact with Hellenistic culture; Greek philosophy, especially Platonism, became a significant influence on Christian thought through theologians such as Origen. Elements of mystery religions such as Mithraism may have been incorporated into Christianity, although scholars differ on the extent to which the developing Christian faith adopted identifiably pagan beliefs.[10]

Theological disputes about the correct interpretation of Christian teaching led to internal conflicts; the various churches of Early Christianity shared a common creed, but actual beliefs varied widely.

Now that I agree with. As I see it, religious belief is about the meaning and mystery of life, about "why am I here." It isn't necessarily about moral codes.

One should never allow morals to prevent them from doing the right thing.

There are excellent guidelines for ethical interpersonal conduct, such as the Golden Rule, that transcend religious doctrine. "Morals" is a misleading word, because religions have different moral codes for personal behavior, even when that behavior doesn't affect other people. One doesn't have to be religious to follow the Golden Rule.

Absolutely. Although the Catholic Church doesn't come off very well in the book, the fictional story isn't "anti-Christian." It just has a viewpoint that's different from orthodox Christian doctrine.

I plan to - but - I haven't missed a Tom Hanks movie yet - not even "Toy Story". Not even that island castaway movie (which I actually saw in the theaters twice). If nothing else, go see it to see his *hair*.

:yeahthat: But I did read the book because the Catholic reaction was so strong that I wanted to see what the deal was.

If the Catholics get any more kirked out over the movie, I just may go to the land of sticky floors, dirty seats, overpriced snacks, and movie talkers.

I read a bunch of books on the topic years before "The DaVinci Code ever came out. I found them interesting from a philosophical point of view but I don't really care enough to get all worked up about it. It was more for theoretcal history.
