I read a bunch of books on the topic years before "The DaVinci Code ever came out. I found them interesting from a philosophical point of view but I don't really care enough to get all worked up about it. It was more for theoretcal history.

Way back when everyone and his brother was reading Da Vinci, I was on a religion forum where people argued incessantly over the likelihood that Jesus actually married Mary. It seems funny to me that they're up in arms over the MOVIE version of this - the book has been the most popular book in years for quite some time now. Almost everyone I know has read it.

Other religions are man's attempt to be good enough to get to heaven, nirvana, etc. Christianity is God's plan of salvation because He knows we cannot be good enough so we need forgiveness. Religion is man reaching up to God. Christianity is God reaching down to man.
How many people have been killed over the concept that one religion is better than another.

But it's okay, it was done in the name of "God", and given his stamp of approval.
No. It is not OK. But you know that. The crusades were ordered by man, not by God. But then again, some people were ordered destroyed by God in the Old Testament; inhabitants of Jericho, Philistines, etc.

Yep. :yay:

The problems the Israelis are having now is they did not follow God's instructions to kill all the inhabitants of the promised land.

What was really wrong with the Crusades? Sounds to me that if those bad azz Popes hadn't of given the order, we all would be praising allah today.

And there you have it. Christians didn't start that - they were defending themselves.

So the Israelis should have done what the Nazis tried to do to them? So genocide is okay as long as someone claims that it has divine blessing? Not that I have any sympathy for Arafat or Hamas, but to me, any such claim is horrifying.

Huh??? We invaded them during the crusades not the other way around, and only one of the Crusades was succesful. Hell, the Fourth Crusade never even made it to the Holy Land.

...spare us the details. Everyone knows Saladin had big giant bows and arrows and it was simply a matter of time before he sent one flying into London. They had to invade.

And you must admit, we're doing much better on this one today. Is this 5?

No it's not five. I wasn't granted absolution for my role over there.

I'm serious, the Crusades were instituted by the Church because they thought they should own Palestine. The real crusades for stopping the expansion of Islam into the western world was in Spain over the Almohads. The crusades to the middle east were an invasion, not a defense, and a poor invasion at that.

Further, they were no different thean the crusades conducted by theTeutonic Knights into the Baltic states in order to convert pagans and Orthadox Catholics to the Roman Church. These were nothing more than an expansion of the Church real estate.

I'm soooo confused. I thought it was ok according to the bible - since it says "you shall not murder" not- "you shall not kill" And isn't a crusade simply a holy war?

Ever read any thing in the Bible? Ever hear of war? There is a time an place for war. The commandment is "You shall not murder." not "You shall not kill." A large difference.

...if you're in no mood for humor this AM, how about this;

These were nothing more than an expansion of the Church real estate

I didn't realize this was in dispute. Isn't it a given?
