Plane Crash into Potomac

I DO understand not wanting to have the entire world and media possibly descend on their lives right now. BUT, our taxes do pay military members, and we have a right to this information and any circumstances pertaining to it. šŸ¤·

At one time I would agree with the right to the info but the media has turned into such ghouls that I think it's prudent for the family to request/and be granted the right to hold off on identifying the pilot.

I read somewhere that a channel 9 newscaster was at DCA the night of the tragedy and trying to interview a family member that was there waiting on their person on the flight and actually asked what the last text messages were. Ghoul.

This is what the Army says
Once required Next Of Kin (NOK) notifications have been completed, the Army Human Resources Command Public Affairs Office will release the information to the Army's Office of Chief of Public Affairs (OCPA) (703-697-7550). OCPA releases to Office of Secretary of Defense Public Affairs and the media. Although families may request their Soldier's name be withheld, it is a matter of public record and may be released without their permission.
So they may release it.

I definitely feel for the family members. It's a horrible thing to have to go through and I KNOW it is too much to think that the media might police themselves.

That would be difference in branch of service, not rank. Not ragging on you just clarifying.

Just sharing knowledge. Spent a number of years with NORAD and we regularly trained for events like that (including monthly written tests to maintain qualifications).

Yep, heard that too. Also heard it was also a NVG (night vision goggles) training mission too. And that is somewhat concerning, at least to me, as NVG reduces one's peripheral vision significantly (something on the order of 140 degrees down to 40 degrees). And given that the H-60 crew only had three members onboard their ability to maintain situational awareness was diminished.

You would be surprised/shocked at the magnitude of "near misses" that occur on a daily basis.
And going by what is being said that the ATC controller was performing double duty (approach control and helicopter ops) it makes the issue more dangerous.
But Mayor Pete Buttplug said that's not true! And he would know because he was on the job, and on top of all things transportation related.

Wait....

One of the Blackhawk crew members was from Great Mills - that might have been reported elswhere on the forums, I didn't search.

One crewmember's family does not wish their name to be released (at this time, it said)

I wonder why? I DO understand not wanting to have the entire world and media possibly descend on their lives right now. BUT, our taxes do pay military members, and we have a right to this information and any circumstances pertaining to it. šŸ¤·
That connection thing has irritated the f*ck out of me just about everywhere I've lived. San Diego, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Orlando, Houston, Tulsa, and elsewhere.

I first noticed it in San Diego when that passenger jet went down in the Potomac in, what, '82? The news stations in San Diego were all "a local connection with the tragedy in DC since a local woman's ex-husband's elderly great uncle's adopted daughter was listed among the survivors."

You get the idea. Even the most tenuous of connections is played up in the media, and it has always pissed me off.

I don't really care what the pilot's name is. I didn't know her. Female, trans, whatever....that doesn't really matter to me either UNLESS the only reason she was there was to check a DEI box. And even then I'd just be, well, what do you expect from a Democrat administration?

In this case, though, he DID live in Great Mills. There are also 7 guys in our Tri-County area, who belong to a Hunt club, and were just literally getting back from a hunting trip.

I don't know any of them but I have a lot of friends who know someone.(Or the parents of someone.)

There were a lot of people emoting on FB today EVEN THOUGH there might have been 6 degrees of separation between them and 1 of the victims. šŸ™„

I get it. People die and it's horribly tragic what happened in this case. Beyond comprehension. But if it's the friend of a friend, of a friend, of a parent... is it really necessary to get so overwrought that you can't even function?

I was actually thinking that maybe the family wouldn't want their person identified if they were at fault.

Clearly more than one mistake was made, and I don't care what the pilot's name is, either. I just hope those people were as qualified as they could be, and not DEI.

Your post is thoughtful and needed now,

But you do know that the only way itā€™s not ā€˜DEIā€™ is if itā€™s a white straight man.

Only 25% of the US population is white, male, straight, itā€™s a big burden for them to shoulder the country. It seems like over the next 4 years 75% of the country will be allowed to loaf while white straight men do the rest.

Why roll your eyes? You say ā€œI just hope those people were as qualified as they could be, and not DEI.ā€

That means itā€™s a white, straight man.

Do you have any idea how much is expected of them? Iā€™m assuming youā€™re a woman by the tone of your posts, literally not talking any responsibility for anything, guess that is a ā€œmanā€™s jobā€.

Donā€™t worry, men will fix this, as usual. Mostly white men these days so itā€™s not DEI.

As tragic, as the plane crash is, there are other tragedies in this whole mess.

There are 100's of first responders and rescue/recovery personnel retrieving the bodies, and in most cases, body parts & internal organs from the water. DCFD is already currently in mourning, for the loss of one of their own to Cancer, but are in charge of those rescue operation (it's in THEIR jurisdiction), even though their personnel were already grieving AND planning a funeral.

My conversation tonight with my person included these words: "It has been described to me as ā€œthe most violent thing Iā€™ve ever seenā€ and that came from an Iraq combat veteran' ".

Our first responders and rescue personnel will not be OK after this without help.
